Gaming clan FaZe ran a show on Twitch to find a new member. 20 Twitch streamers from all over the world competed for prizes worth more than 1.2 million euros. The show was scheduled to run on Twitch 24 hours a day for 15 days. But now the show had to be stopped: public resistance was too high. Several Covid cases had surfaced in the house.

What was that show?

  • It was sort of like “FaZe is looking for the next Twitch star” mixed with Big Brother. The show was scheduled to run for 15 days: it was scheduled to broadcast 24 hours a day from a warehouse on Twitch from May 5th. The first 130 hours were also shown – an average of 2800 people watched.
  • In the show, 20 selected young talents competed in all kinds of games in a warehouse. It should be looking for the “next member of FaZe Clan”.
  • But Covid threw a spanner in the works for the organizers. After 6 days the show had to be stopped.

What was there to win? There were several prizes:

  • one million US dollars in cryptocurrency
  • a $250,000 sponsorship contract
  • a Nissan GT-R

Plus membership in FaZE and a bright perspective on the future. Because the Twitch streamers who compete there can become stars overnight with huge marketing power behind them. After all, FaZe is the largest esports clan in the world.

Mix of Big Brother and “You do the stream”

What was playing there? It was a typical “elimination show” as you know it from reality TV:

In a match, 5 players were trapped in Dixie toilets and the toilets were then lifted 3.3 meters in the air. The players had to solve a puzzle in the dixie toilet, unlock a window and shoot a toy gun through the window at a target.

There were also typical scenes from the “Big Brother” house. Experienced FaZe members also acted as mentors or judges.

At other times, the candidates took turns designing and moderating the stream themselves.

The days were uploaded to YouTube as highlight compilations, here for example the dixie toilet game

3 Covid cases surfaced after a few days

What was the problem? Early on in the show, back on May 7, three players had to drop out after testing positive for Covid.

This was seen as unfair by outsiders, because young streamers were eliminated for something they had no control over.

It was then said that in the end whoever had the best immune system would win.

Here’s how FaZe reacted: The clan initially opposed it. It was said that the show could not be canceled because there were too many commitments. It’s not that bad if someone leaves. People will not be forgotten.

For three streamers who dropped out, you simply brought in two new candidates: the show had to go on.

However, those who dropped out seemed inconsolable at having missed the great opportunity for their career.

Covid case 4 caused the demolition

That brought then but the rethinking: Ultimately, however, FaZe Covid had to bow down. When the fourth participant tested positive for Covid-19 on May 11, it was said that the show was now suspended. Suddenly the health of the participants and employees was the top priority.

It is said that the show will continue when everything is safe. Then all 20 candidates and the 2 subsequent nominees will have a chance to take part in the show.

This is the reaction: After the Clan was severely criticized for the “The Show must go on” decision, it is now largely agreed that FaZe made the right decision.

However, the comments on Twitter also say that this could have been averted by a two-week quarantine before the show. But you’re always smarter afterwards.
