Sometimes press releases are useful in our industry, I wouldn’t deny that. There would be the notifications telling us that a major game title is shifting. Most of the time, these PMs are one to two days late when we have already picked up the important information from social media and discussed it in detail. There are also these PMs that I delete without reading because they come from Porsche or some strange web portal whose newsletter one of my ex-colleagues subscribed to. And I still get these PMs today because the e-mail addresses of these ex-colleagues are being redirected to me. It’s kind of like the spam in your private mailboxes. I only get five copies of it. And then there are those press releases where I can tell five meters upwind that someone spent at least 30 minutes tweaking the subject line to make it sound interesting enough for me to open the newsletter. So far this has happened twice in my buffing career (which has spanned 13 years). In 2021 when I received a PM about gaming related search results and mentioning Destiny’s Corridors of Time. I’m like: Huh? Corridors of Time?!
And now it has happened for the second time! The year 2022 will also give me at least one press release that makes me curious.

Okay, so someone at online gaming platform Solitaired.com seems to have been thinking, “How do we get more people to come to our site and get sucked into the online casino morass?” During this brainstorming, it came out that the job of a great video game hero could be given a real-world equivalent and corresponding real-world content in order to pack it into a crisp top and flop list. So the people who made the lists did a bit of searching on the internet and Indeed job aggregator to find out average salaries and voila! By the way, I save the link to this website because. Do you want to know who would be the “richest”? That would be Handsome Jack from Borderlands, because as CEO of a US company he would earn an average annual salary of around 430,000 US dollars. Characters from the Final Fantasy universe make two appearances in the Flop 20 list of video game top earners. Cloud Strife, the radiant and sometimes somewhat reluctant protagonist of Final Fantasy 7, would most likely be a private first-class soldier in the US Army and would make almost 26,000 US dollars a year – because he is “only” an infantryman from Shinra and no SOLDIER. This puts him in 3rd place among the lowest earners.
In 10th place on the flop list, ahead of taxi driver Nico Bellic from GTA4 and behind Crash Bandicoot as a bodyguard, is Lightning aka Claire Farron from Final Fantasy 13.
