Streamer cracks silly joke on buddy's twitch chat, gets banned for sexual harassment

Streamer Benjamin “DrLupo” Lupo switched from Twitch to YouTube in 2021 but is still active on Amazon’s platform. At the weekend, he wrote a sentence in the chat of the well-known streamer Ninja, which prompted Twitch to temporarily block him.

What exactly was the streamer blocked for? On May 15, streamer DrLupo announced via Twitter that he was banned from Twitch. The reason for this was an “unsolicited sexual advance”. The ban should last 7 days.

DrLupo also provided the explanation for the ban. He had written the phrase “Sit on my face” in Tyler “Ninja” Blevins’ chat. This statement is often associated with a sexual act.

However, in this context, the saying was to be understood as fun among streamers.

Ninja’s wife, Jessice Blevins, responded to the ban by texting “Sit on my face” in the chat and then asking on Twitter if she, as a wife, could say that (via Twitter).

Why is the lock a problem? Although the ban only lasted a few hours and DrLupo no longer actively streams on Twitch, the ban caused some discussions:

  • For one thing, there are complaints about how quickly people get banned for chat messages, while some streamers get off lighter for livestream offenses.
  • On the other hand, the blocks recognize no context and no irony. This is particularly problematic when this happens automatically.

Twitch’s ban policy always causes discussions

What’s the problem with the bans? Twitch takes a very curious stance when it comes to bans. Pornographic material and sexual harassment in particular are actually very actively pursued, and here they repeatedly overshoot the mark:

Both bans have since been lifted, but a stale aftertaste remains. Because these blocks often seem arbitrary, especially when you consider that there are streamers on Twitch who consciously play with the limits of Twitch.

The 5 biggest Twitch bans that caused quite a stir

For example, a streamer was only banned for 3 days even though she put on a sex show and showed her genitals. Although that was also just an accident, compared to what Forsen, Clix and DrLupo did, it seems much more serious – and did not result in a permanent ban.

As early as 2021, MeinMMO editor Schuhmann took a closer look at Twitch’s ban policy and wrote an opinion on it that is still relevant today:

Twitch’s ban policy is getting more and more ridiculous
