Buying a PS5 from PlayStation Direct: After 2 drops in May – will the third one follow soon?

PlayStation Direct surprised in April with a whopping 3 PS5 drops. And from the looks of it, it’s going to be the same in May. Will there be refills for the 3rd time soon?

Update from 05/17/2022, 07:43 a.m: Yesterday the 2nd campaign in May took place at PS Direct. And it could well be that it won’t stop there. Finally, in April, Sony’s in-house PS5 distribution brought in 3x replenishment, so it’s definitely within the realm of possibility. We therefore recommend that you continue to check your inbox and spam folder regularly. As early as next week, PlayStation Direct could be hot again.

Update from 05/16/2022, 11:55 a.m: At PlayStation Direct the closed sale has been going on for a while, unfortunately there is no sign of an open sale so far. A new sales campaign for all interested parties should therefore be canceled again today.

Update from 05/16/2022, 10:40 a.m: Good news: According to initial reports, PS Direct payment via PayPal is apparently already working (must be added separately).

Update from 05/16/2022, 10:35 a.m: There’s an exciting new addition to PlayStation Direct. As of today, the FAQ on the official site states that PayPal is also accepted as a payment method in addition to credit cards. It is not yet clear whether this applies to current sales or only for the future.

Update from 05/16/2022, 09:47 a.m.: Regarding the upcoming PS Direct sale, there were some reports of technical issues last time around. It felt like most of these were based on credit cards, which were having problems and were simply not being accepted. Some buyers explained that it still worked in the end – but only after they tried it with a different credit card. So if you have problems with the checkout or with the payment today – try it (if possible) with a different credit card as well.

Update from 05/16/2022, 08:52: For the upcoming sale at PlayStation Direct: If you’re at the start of the campaign and should see a long waiting time – don’t despair right away. The figure often jumps to a much more tolerable value after just a few minutes. So stay tuned and be patient.

Original message from May 16, 2022, 7:50 a.m.: Hamburg, Germany – PlayStation Direct, Sony’s in-house PS5 sale, not only caused a big surprise with a total of three drops in April, but also provided a lot of conversation among PS5 hunters. Afterwards, many wondered whether the replenishment would continue so generously in May. Now there are early signs that PS Direct could actually be moving in the same direction in May. Because since yesterday the May 2nd sale has already been confirmed there.

Buy PS5: PlayStation Direct with May’s 2nd Supply Drop

When was the last time you could buy the PS5 from PlayStation Direct? That’s not so long ago. Just last week, on May 12th, the last closed sale took place at PS Direct. However, potential buyers have been waiting in vain for a long time for an open sale for all interested parties (without an invitation).

What is the current status of PS5 supplies on PlayStation Direct? Still pretty good. In general, PlaySation Direct has launched at least one sales campaign every month without exception since it was launched, so not a month has gone by without fresh consoles. And after the first replenishment in May last week, the 2nd drop date of the current month has already been set. Today, May 16, from 10:30 a.m. German time, the PS5 will again be on sale at PS Direct in a closed sale.

The whole thing should run until about 12:00 p.m. Only users registered with PlayStation Direct who have also received invitations from Sony can take part in this campaign. As always, the invitation including the link to the sale will be sent by email. So be sure to check your inbox (and spam folder) again. By the way, you need a valid credit card for the purchase. It is not yet clear whether this time there will finally be an open sale again.

Buy PS5 from PlayStation Direct: If you want to try your luck with Sony’s in-house PS5 distribution, the first thing to do is sign up with PlayStation Direct with a PSN account register for sale – in advance of a sale. A one-time registration should suffice and also apply to further promotions with this provider, provided that you have not yet been considered in the invitation. As soon as that’s done, it’s basically just a matter of waiting and hoping that you’ll be selected to take part.

As soon as the next PS Direct sale is due, Sony will then email randomly selected participants from the pool of registered accounts about the upcoming PS5 drop. This usually happens a day before the start of sales. If you have been selected and have received a corresponding email, then you can buy a PlayStation 5 directly from Sony on the date specified (credit card required). In principle, PS Direct is nothing more than a closed, invitation-based direct purchase from Sony. Incidentally, following the closed campaigns, there were already a few open sales, where all interested parties could take part without prior invitation (PSN account AND credit card required). Lately, however, one has unfortunately repeatedly waited in vain for it.

Can you improve the odds at PS Direct? In short: No, unfortunately not. Because to this day it is not known which criteria Sony uses when selecting participants for a PlayStation Direct sale. Some suspect that this is done randomly. Others also speculate that loyal and active PlayStation users (e.g. with an ongoing PS Plus membership) will be preferred. But to this day it’s all pure speculation. Solid facts are not available. Apart from registering with PlayStation Direct, there is nothing you can do as of now that could noticeably improve the chances of an invitation.
