Red Dead Redemption 2: Fans want to save the beautiful, dying MMO – CEO gives hope and destroys it

Strauss Zellnick CEO

Cowboy epic Red Dead Redemption 2 is a huge hit for publisher Take-Two and developer Rockstar. But the online offshoot, Red Dead Online, should actually be developed further. But there have been no more updates since 2021: since January 2022, fans have wanted to use the hashtag #SaveRedDeadOnline to force a statement on the future of the MMO. It came and gave hope for a moment, but the bubble burst quickly.

This is the situation:

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 sold incredibly well. It was a huge hit on PS4 and Xbox One in 2018, coming to PC in 2019. Take-Two is said to have sold more than 44 million units of the cowboy epic.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 will not be further developed with DLCs, but after the campaign is over. However, the online mode, Red Dead Online, should receive updates and be expanded over the years. Just like GTA 5 hasn’t evolved, but GTA Online has.
  • But Red Dead Online was not under a good star right from the start: there were few updates and many problems. There hasn’t been a major update since July 2021 – the last DLC was “Blood Money”: It delivered new equipment and raids.

It’s been almost a year since the last Red Dead Online DLC:

This was the fans’ idea: Even though Red Dead Online is so poorly maintained, it’s still a beautiful game as it’s based on Red Dead Redemption 2 and that has insanely high production values.

There are several thousand people who love spending their time on the prairies, horseback riding and adventures. Especially in times of the Corona crisis, many used Red Dead Online as a destination to escape from the gray reality. Because when you put on a mask in Red Dead Online, something exciting happens afterwards, like a bank robbery, when you put on a mask in reality, rarely exciting happens afterwards.

Since January 2022, fans have been putting pressure on Rockstar with a #SaveRedDeadoNline campaign via Twitter and Reddit for new content to come.

CEO says: Take-Two continues to support Red Dead Online

This is what the CEO says: In an interview with IGN, the boss of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, was asked about the campaign. He said:

“Rock Star Games is talking about the updates that are coming and we’re working on a hell of a lot of stuff at Rockstar Games. I heard the frustration and it gives me credit that they want more content. Rocksstar will tell you everything else in due course.”

When asked if Take-Two plans to continue supporting Red Dead Online, they said it’s still the plan.

How could you read that? You could read that as “Updates are in the works and there’s more to come” – so there was reason to hope that there would really be new updates to Red Dead Redemption 2.

CEO just said that the servers stay online

That was the cold shower: After the interview was published, however, the restriction came a few hours later: the promise to continue supporting Red Dead Online “referred solely to the online servers”. Updates would be purely Rockstar’s business.

This is the reaction: On Twitter, Red Dead Online fans were hopeful and then disappointed.

It seems that Red Dead Online will go into “maintenance mode”. This means that the servers will remain online, but no relevant new content will appear. It almost looks like Rockstar is turning to GTA 6 entirely:
