Star Wars Movie Update: When Are Rogue Squadron and Taika Waititi's Project Coming?

Since The Rise of Skywalker, things have gone quiet in the Star Wars film world. Which doesn’t mean that nothing happens.

We already know of several projects that are planned or were once planned. Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has now provided a current update.

There is a plan

According to Kennedy, they definitely have a roadmap for upcoming Star Wars movies. The rhythm at which new films are released in cinemas should no longer be as “relentless” as before.

So what to expect next? According to a new report by Vanity Fair Taika Waititi’s (Thor: Ragnarok) Star Wars project “probably” comes first, followed by Patty Jenkins’ (Wonder Woman) Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

More on the subject:

There is currently no specific date for either film. When it was announced in December 2020, it was said that Rogue Squadron could be expected around Christmas 2023, but it is unclear whether this is still the case.

Another film is to be produced by Marvel’s Kevin Feige, but it doesn’t sound like it’s 100 percent certain yet: “I’d like to see what kind of film he comes up with,” she says.

It was once planned to have director Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) make a new trilogy. There isn’t much new about this. Kennedy says he’s busy with other projects, including a multi-film Netflix deal. Whether this project will be implemented at all remains uncertain.

She’s also reluctant to talk about new Star Wars trilogies in the future: “I hesitate to use the word trilogy because Star Wars is much more about a continuous narrative.”

So while the film business is a bit quieter, series are taking that place. Obi-Wan Kenobi is coming to Disney+ this month, followed by Andor this summer. Further series are planned or in progress.
