Strategy hit Songs of Conquest: Good news for the Steam Deck, the developers are working on it

from Thilo Bayer
The RPG strategy insider tip Songs of Conquest not only got off to a good start in Steam Early Access, but is also running well on the Steam Deck. This is suggested by a practice report from a well-known Linux gaming site. The developers will also have their say on how to proceed.

Anyone who likes Heroes of Might & Magic games should have longed for the release of Songs of Conquest. On 10.05. the release in Early Access on Steam was a success and Steam Deck users can also be relaxed.

Songs of Conquest on Linux

Like the website Gaming on Linux reports, Lavapotion’s RPG strategy game not only runs very well on desktop Linux, but also on the Steam deck. Thanks to Proton, the title would run smoothly in both configurations – “install and play” is the motto. Especially on desktop Linux everything runs perfectly with “several 100 fps”. Optimal implementation on the Steam Deck is not possible without manual work by the developers.

Although Songs of Conquest still runs at up to 60 fps even in high settings, there are still a few problems. Even with experimental Proton, the cutscenes would be upside down and some UI elements would be too small, making them difficult to read. The good news, the default keyboard and mouse setup works well on the gaming handheld. It would be even better with proper controller support. If you set the game settings to medium and enable the 40 Hz mode from the Steam Deck Beta, you get a good three hours of gameplay. It is not known whether the developers are still working on a larger font and the other points of criticism. But the developers claim to be working on the game for another year before the final release.

Songs of Conquest: What is being worked on?

The developers have also reported after a week in Early Access. In the meantime, several minor bug fixes for Songs of Conquest have been released, which among other things resolve difficulties in the campaign. The basis for a roadmap is currently being worked on. The developers still have many ideas for small changes that should improve the overall experience. However, one was surprised how popular the multiplayer mode is, since the game was actually primarily designed as a single player.

That’s why we’re currently working on quick fixes to improve an MP session. However, a larger and more stable system will have to wait “a bit” because, according to the developer, it is quite time-consuming to change the entire system. Simultaneous turns for multiplayer games are definitely on the list, as is a random map generator.
