Cellular: Telekom with the best network (5)

from Andrew Link
According to the current analysis by Open Signal, Telekom has the best mobile network in Germany. Overall, however, Germany is rather average in an international comparison.

Deutsche Telekom has the best mobile network in Germany. This emerges from the measurements by Open Signal, which have now been published. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that second and third place went to Vodafone and Telefonica. But how big is the distance? The analysis also clarifies this: On average, Telekom customers can surf at 51.8 Mbit/s. Vodafone customers are hardly slower and surf at an average speed of 47.3 Mbit/s. At some distance comes the Telefonica network with 36.5 Mbit/s, which the group uses for the core brand O2. The respective upload speeds are 13.1 Mbit/s, 11.1 Mbit/s and 11.2 Mbit/s.

The 5G offers of all providers are advertised with data rates of up to one gigabit. This is rarely seen in practice due to various factors – on average, the above values are the result. But even under favorable conditions, 5G remains more of a promise. The class winner in all categories offers “the fastest ‘5G download speed’ (152.1 Mbit/s) and ‘5G upload speed’ (35.1 Mbit/s). What generally speaks for Telekom is that general availability of 5G and the range. The Bonn-based company offers the best network expansion compared to the competition.

Would users want more? That’s probably not a question, but under the given circumstances Telekom is at the top: 13.3 percent of the time users are connected to 5G. That’s about twice as much as Vodafone. But the competition isn’t all bad either: Customers “on the Vodafone network enjoyed the best mobile multiplayer gaming experience as well as the best overall experience for over-the-top voice services (OTT).” Most of the time, however, it’s Telekom that wins – even if it’s only just. Telefonica, meanwhile, would have to invest in network expansion in order to catch up with its competitors.

How does Germany compare to Europe and the world? There are also numbers from Open Signal, but they are not quite as brand new. But it’s enough for a rough overview: In the most recent survey, Germany is no longer in the top 15 in terms of speeds, but it’s still enough for midfield in terms of user experience. Here, however, small countries in particular, such as Switzerland, which is at least mountainous, or the flat Netherlands, benefit even more with a location advantage, which is then also reflected in the availability of 5G. But even the US creates better network coverage with 5G than Germany, which does not make the top 15. All dates are in the gallery. Open Signal does not compare the measured values to tariffs, which would present the results in a different light. Germany is traditionally one of the high-priced mobile phone markets.
