Niantic's real-world metaverse: Coming soon to Pokémon Go

from Susan Brown
Pokémon Go is pushing players back into the old ways of trainers after two years of corona pandemic state. This means that, in line with the original intention of Pokémon Go, you should go outside more. Because of this, Remote Raid Passes will be removed from the weekly boxes. And that’s why Niantic’s real-world metaverse is coming to Pokémon Go.

The corona pandemic, which is (still) spreading worldwide, is now becoming more of an endemic in one region or another … or is simply declared over by some people. While currently, in mid-May 2022, large cities in Asia are again being cordoned off to a certain extent due to virus outbreaks, in the western world at least most of the face coverings are falling.

Pokemon Go developers aren’t holding back either, and neither are their players. Because Pokémon Go was originally intended for people to get out into the fresh air thanks to AR gaming, the developers are now gradually reducing the corona bonuses. The latest offering will be the free Remote Raid Passes, which you can currently get once a week from the weekly box in the shop. “From May 23, the box for 1 PokéCoin will no longer contain a long-distance raid pass, but a changing selection of items,” says Niantics.

In Ingress, the people at Niantic are already testing all sorts of social features that allow you to find fellow players (in this case: fellow agents) with a separate community app. These social features include

  • Local #Communities: You can create local communities to find other players.
  • Niantic Friends: You can add friends and other agents and manage your friends from all Niantic titles.
  • Direct Messages and Group Chats: You can centralize chats with friends and organize field ops.
  • Live Events: You can quickly and easily create local events, farms or meetups with reminders and invite the community to participate.

What has been available to try in the Ingress community since the beginning of May 2022 will also make its way to Pokémon Go in the coming months. “Some of the new social sharing features are in a separate Niantic app and have been tested over an extended period of time. They will be rolled out in Pokémon GO in the coming months. These features are intended to facilitate communication between trainers, the search for communities and make on-site raid battles more worthwhile,” the developers said.
