EA supposedly wants to be bought up and nothing surprises me anymore

It could be that we have another gigantic company takeover in the future. Like the news page puck mentioned in a report, those responsible at Electronic Arts are currently actively looking for a buyer or a merger with another company. According to the report, initial talks have already taken place, including with Apple, Amazon and Disney.

According to reports, the US cable network manufacturer Comcast, which wanted to merge EA with the media company NBC Universal, was particularly well placed in the race for a possible merger, while EA CEO Andrew Wilson should have retained the management. However, the deal allegedly fell through last month because no agreement was reached on the takeover price.

License decline as a reason for rethinking?

EA is one of the largest and most important video game publishers in the world and has numerous prominent titles in its portfolio, including Need for Speed, the Sims and its sports game division.

The emergence of the current takeover rumors may therefore come as a surprise to some, but EA’s position could at least falter somewhat in the near future. After all the rights to the Star Wars games will once again be owned by Disney from 2023, the company will also no longer have a FIFA license from next year. Instead, EA’s popular football series will be called EA Sports FC:

For classification: Electronic Arts’ market value is currently just under $37 billion. In the past 18 months, the publisher himself had gone on a shopping spree, including the racing game developer Codemasters for almost 5 billion dollars.

Important NOTE: So far, only the mentioned report has discussed a purchase interest from Electronic Arts, so these are just rumors at the moment. However, such a takeover or merger would no longer be a complete surprise in view of the ever-increasing consolidation of the market.

Tobias Veltin

If the report of a “buying interest” from EA had come up a few years ago, I would probably have been very surprised? This big publisher with this portfolio wants to be swallowed up or merged? I couldn’t have imagined it properly.

But the times have changed. Takeovers on a massive scale are now felt to be the rule rather than the exception. The Zynga sale to Take-Two and the acquisition of Bungie by Sony were comparatively peanuts. At least compared to Microsoft, which first bought Bethesda in 2020 and is now also planning to incorporate Activision-Blizzard in the future. At least since this last deal, everything is possible for me in the industry, which is why the EA message didn’t really surprise me anymore. The market continues to consolidate and it’s exciting to see that EA appears to have been in talks with big players looking to invest and expand in the gaming space.

What will become of it is of course not yet clear, the message is still in rumor status. However, the events of the last two years have dulled me to such an extent that nothing in this area would surprise me anymore.

What do you think of the EA takeover rumor?
