PS Plus Premium: Sorry, you will not be able to stream PS5 games on your PS4

Returnal and Co. remain exclusive to the PS5 for the time being.

The new PS Plus is launching in some Asian countries today, and Sony has clarified the most important questions about the service just in time for the launch. One of those questions concerns streaming, because the highest tier – PS Plus Premium – lets you play PlayStation games without downloading them first. So does that mean we’ll be allowed to play PS5 exclusives on a PS4 in the future? Unfortunately, the answer is “no” – at least for now.

That is new: Microsoft introduced cloud streaming for Game Pass a while back. Thanks to the function, we can, for example, play games for the current generation of consoles on an Xbox One, for which we actually should have bought an Xbox Series X/S. With PS Plus Premium, however, this is not an option at first, because Sony puts in one FAQ clear that PS5 titles can not be streamed – no matter what platform.

Why is that? The company does not give any reasons. Technical difficulties could possibly be behind the decision, because not every title can be streamed in Xbox Game Pass either. The technology just isn’t fully mature yet.

However, another reason could be that Sony does not want to cannibalize sales of the PlayStation 5 by allowing exclusive titles to be used via stream on the PS4 or PC. However, this is only a guess.

Hope for the future: As streaming technology continues to improve, PS5 games could also be streamed on PS Plus Premium at some point in the future. In fact, that’s very likely. However, we cannot say how long this will take.

What games can I stream with PS Plus Premium?

Summarized again: In principle, games for the PS4, PS2, PS1 and the PSP can be streamed as well as downloaded. PS3 titles, on the other hand, can only be streamed as Sony hasn’t found a way to get the console’s library to work natively on other systems. Games from the PS5 can only be downloaded for the time being.

Offer still seems a little chaotic: So some games could only be downloaded and others could only be streamed. But that’s not the end of it. Sony is also keeping open the fact that games from the classic library may not be able to be streamed at the launch of PS Plus Premium, or at least not yet. So there will be maintenance work for the service from the start.
