Restricted EC card payment: Since Tuesday evening, only cash payment has been possible in some cases

from Oliver Jaeger
According to payment service providers and banks, payment with giro and credit cards has been restricted in this country since Tuesday evening. There is a problem with the terminals from the manufacturer Verifone, as the payment service providers Payone and Concardis announced. At many supermarket checkouts, you can currently only pay in cash.

Some of the card payment terminals in Germany are currently on strike, which is why customers have to use cash when shopping at some supermarket checkouts until the problem has been resolved. As payment service providers and banks report, payment by card (giro or credit) has only been possible to a limited extent since Tuesday evening. The reason is said to be an error that occurred in the card payment terminals from the US manufacturer Verifone. This is how the two payment service providers Payone and Concardis report it.

Software error in Verifone – We do not recommend restarting yourself

“Like other network operators, we are currently experiencing significant nationwide restrictions on the processing of transactions with H5000 card payment terminals from the manufacturer Verifone,” says Payone. However, the problem is not as drastic as it actually is, because the Federal Association of German Banks is said to have assured on behalf of the German banking industry that the affected type of card payment terminals does not make up the majority of the devices used in Germany. In the meantime, intensive work is being done to fix the problem.

The service providers Payone and Concardis explained that they are working together with the terminal manufacturer Verifone and are looking for a joint solution. The fault in the card payment terminals is said to be due to an error that occurs in special versions of the Verifone software. In addition, Concardis is asking retailers who are currently having to deal with the fault not to restart the devices on their own and to leave the terminals connected to the power supply and the network, otherwise the manufacturer will not be able to rectify the error.
