PS5 Pro and new Xbox: Release already in 2023 at the level of Radeon RX 7700 XT?

from Norman Wittkopf
The Chinese TV manufacturer TCL has presented its current expectations for the console market and what it could look like with an intermediate step for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

For some time now, there has been talk of a hardware upgrade for the consoles from Microsoft and Sony released in 2020 before a full generation change, as was the case with Playstation 4 (Pro) and Xbox One (X) at the time. According to a recent presentation by TCL at a press conference in Poland, the designated PS5 Pro and a new Xbox Series could be released next year or in 2024.

According to the expectations of the Chinese electronics manufacturer, the so-called mid-gen update should produce 8K-capable consoles, which should come with an estimated performance of the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT graphics card, which is also expected for this year. According to the rumor mill, this will be based on the new RDNA 3 architecture with a designated Navi 32 GPU.

Still music of the future

Of course, as Videocardz.com reports, there’s no confirmation yet that RDNA 3 will come to consoles, but given the RDNA 2 graphics in the current consoles and the proximity to the desktop graphics cards of the Radeon series, at least it is not a very far-fetched prediction. 4K resolution rendering ability and 8K output, meanwhile, may depend on updated temporal upscaling techniques such as FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0.

There is currently no official information on this from Microsoft, Sony or even the chip supplier AMD, although a possible hint in the human resources area has already been identified. Meanwhile, Microsoft had already confirmed that it was working on the next Xbox, while Sony had a patent related to multi-GPU scaling. PS4 and Xbox One took four years from initial release for a mid-cycle hardware upgrade and seven years for a successor. 2024 would therefore not be unlikely for the mid-gen update.
