Bye, bye PS4: In 3 years, the console will finally have had its day for Sony

The end of the PS4 is in sight.

The end of the PS4 is in sight.

The end of the PS4 is in sight.

The PS4 has proven to be a hugely lucrative console for Sony since its release in 2013. Not least because of this, it is still being fed plenty of games, almost a year and a half after the successor model PS5 came onto the market. But that should change in the foreseeable future.

PS4 will no longer get first-party games from 2025

The long service life of the PS4 is probably related in no small part to the poor availability of the PS5. After all, fans can only enjoy new PlayStation titles if they also own a console on which to play the games. Accordingly, there are currently still a lot of cross-gen releases, that’s how they should be God of War 2 and According to rumors also the new CoD Modern Warfare 2 got another release on the PS4.

A definitive end of the PS4 is now in sight. In a new investor presentation, Sony has revealed its plans for first-party games. One of the graphs shows that numerous cross-gen titles are still to be released in fiscal year 2022, namely almost 40% of all first-party games. It looks very different for the fiscal year 2025, as there are no longer any releases planned for the PS4:

Of course, that’s not exactly surprising, cross-gen games were originally planned to last until 2023 at the latest. This schedule may have been pushed back due to the poor availability of the PS5, although based on the new presentation we don’t know exactly when support for first-party titles will end on the PS4 between 2022 and 2025.

More PC and Mobile: As can also be seen in the graphic, Sony not only wants to distance itself from the PS4, but at the same time also wants to expand its market to PC and mobile in the coming years. Up to 20% of the releases could therefore come on mobile devices and 30% for PC.

Sony is working on PS5 availability

Just a few months ago, Sony had to adjust its sales forecasts for the PS5 downwards due to a shortage of chips. Recently there was at least a glimmer of hope that a new PS5 chip from AMD could ensure better availability. Currently, the console is still almost impossible to get.

After all, Sony CEO Jim Ryan promised improvement in the investor meeting: According to this, the delivery problems of the PS5 are Sony’s “top priority”. It remains to be seen whether this will mean an improvement for us in the near future.

Do you still want new Sony games for your PS4 or has the old console slowly become obsolete for you too?
