WoW: Why we wished Thrall dead in 2015

First appoint a warmonger as chief, then slay him in a duel: has Thrall failed the Horde?

He is undoubtedly one of the most famous, if not the most famous, character in all of World of Warcraft: Thrall, liberator of the orcs, founder of the Horde, warchief and chief shaman of the world. But in 2015 Go’el really got on the nerves of many players, at least since Cataclysm. Our editorial team felt the same way back then. In the forums, many players even called for the death of the greenskin.

It turned out that ten reasons were mentioned particularly often – you can find out what they are below. Incidentally, we would like to point out here that we primarily quote voices from the community, but additional opinions marked as such have of course grown on our crap or that of the corresponding editor. But enough banter, let’s take a look at why the players think Thrall should finally bite the dust!

10 reasons why Thrall must finally die – when he really pissed off the community in 2015

1: He’s just another boring orc

Many players are fed up with Orcs after the Battle for Orgrimmar and Warlords of Draenor. That’s kind of understandable, after all, the Alliance played a rather minor role in the previous two expansions.

From the blue perspective, Thrall is just another orc and one too many. The fact that Alliance members had to save the former Warchief (and thus the embodiment of the enemy) in Cataclysm went against the grain for many. His story on Draenor, his encounter with his parallel dimension family and the duel against Garrosh are wasted development time for these players that could have been put into the draenei and naaru.

2: Thrall is a powerful superhero and that sucks

In Cataclysm, Thrall was the one who organized the fight against Deathwing and became an even better shaman with the help of the Dragon Aspects. It felt like he was everywhere, calming the elements and guiding players through the expansion. Many saw this as patronizing.

Thrall seemed like the superhero and the players more like his sidekicks, handing him everything he ultimately needs to take credit for our efforts. Taming the elements alone before the Maelstrom, he practically yelled, “Look at me, I’m so incredibly important!” It’s a little better on Draenor, after all, our hero is now the commander of his own fortress, including a stately entourage. Thrall still makes a whole bunch of decisions for us – at least on the Horde side.

3: He has no mistakes and makes none!

Thrall freed the orcs from captivity, led them to Kalimdor, and orchestrated the fierce battle against Archimonde in Warcraft 3. He continued to save the Horde thereafter, time and time again. To many players, it seems like Thrall is infallible, like he never makes a mistake – like Thrall is the wild card for every situation where the world threatens to go down the drain again.

This became particularly clear after he had abdicated as Warchief. From then on, Thrall became the wise advisor in the background, always knowing what to do and how to solve even the biggest problem. And that leads to the “Superman problem”: Nobody likes that kind of infallible clean-up. At least since Game of Thrones, we tend to prefer characters with corners, sins and lots of edges – maybe because it’s so much easier for us to identify with one or the other character.

4: With Thrall, World of Warcraft degenerates into a soap opera!

The argument dates back to the “Wrath of the Lich King” days, when Thrall flirted with Jaina Proudmoore in what felt like every cutscene. It was precisely their interpersonal relationship that sometimes watered down the boundary between Horde and Alliance enormously. And basically, such a flirtation is not wrong, on the contrary: world-famous musicals are based on relationships like this – and they will surely know how it’s done!

At some point, however, it became a bit too much of a good thing and players almost had the impression that they were watching a real soap opera and not the warlike actions of two enemy factions: Who just got pissed off again and mad at whom because [irgendeinen trivialen Grund wie “Klobrille nicht runtergeklappt” einfügen]? If it hadn’t been for thwarts and aggro bags like Garrosh that caused a stink and thus some tension, even if only in the background, we would probably have arrived in World of GZSZ by now. Well, it’s a good thing Thrall was bombed by the market and Jaina’s place…!

5: Thrall is a wimp and doesn’t deserve this horde

Some Horde players don’t want to forgive Thrall for blowing out the lights on Garrosh in Warlords of Draenor. But this is more due to the general dissatisfaction with Thrall and his shamanistic way of diplomacy, responsibility, tolerance, wisdom and patience.

The players are divided on the subject. Some hate Thrall, others love the green super shaman. Still others wished he would just bang the table again!

“It’s just inappropriate for the faction,” says many forums. Garrosh embodied more of what many expected of a true ‘warlord’, with his ideas of honor, strength and willingness to fight. Sure, a pack like the Horde led by a hippie like Thrall really does look a bit pale. However, the races belonging to the Horde should not necessarily take the Sha-corrupted dictator and mass murderer as a grandiose role model.
