Huge hit on Kickstarter: ceramic keycaps that look like blocks of ice

from Sarah Petzold
There are plenty of keycaps for mechanical keyboards, but now one manufacturer has presented a special model on Kickstarter: ceramic keys. These special keycaps should provide a unique typing experience and at the same time convince with their low weight and high durability.

If you want to equip your mechanical keyboard with new keycaps, you will find a colorful potpourri of different models at various dealers and suppliers. It takes a lot of effort to stand out from the crowd here. But that’s exactly what the manufacturer Cerakey is trying to do on Kickstarter – with great success, because the minimum amount, converted from a good 6,000 euros, was significantly exceeded at 378,000 euros.

The manufacturer speaks of a unique typing experience

Cerakey advertises keycaps on the crowdfunding platform, that look like blocks of ice. The special thing about these keycaps: They are made of ceramic, but should still convince with their light weight and high durability. The manufacturer states that a normal letter key should weigh about 3.5 grams, the space bar weighs 32 grams. There is also RGB lighting, which should come into its own with the ceramic keys.

On the Kickstarter website, the team describes why Cerakey decided to produce ceramic keycaps as follows:
[…] Ceramic offers a warm, jade-like feel and a silky-smooth texture unmatched by any other material. Some smartphone manufacturers have been using ceramic for the back of their devices for years and praise it as a key selling point. As for keycaps, ceramic can guarantee a deep sound and a fundamentally solid typing feel that you have never experienced before.

However, the complete key set, which the manufacturer offers in 13 different colors, is not exactly cheap: The set of 113 keys in the Cherry MX profile costs 129 US dollars, keycap remover and space bar included. Deliveries of the sets are scheduled to begin worldwide in August 2022.
