A new handheld console lets you play your favorite games from when you were 20 years younger

A company has introduced a new handheld console. However, the secret strength of the device lies in another function.

Handheld devices represent an alternative to gaming PCs or stationary gaming consoles for many gamers. The Nintendo Switch is the most successful device here and many are waiting for the announcement of a Pro version.

With the Steam Deck, a second strong handheld has now appeared, which is really well received by many testers.

With the Odin Pro, another interesting handheld has now appeared. But its strength does not lie in games for Windows, but elsewhere.

The Odin Pro relies on Android and a Full HD display

What hardware does the handheld use? Ayn Technologies relies on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 for Odin Pro. This is a former high-end processor from the smartphone sector. The processor originally came onto the market in 2018.

The almost 6-inch display offers you a Full HD resolution. Depending on the model, 4-8 GB of RAM and up to 128 GB of system memory are installed.

What operating system does the Odin Pro use? Android 10 is used on the device. So you don’t get a handheld with Windows and can therefore not play all your Windows games directly.

However, a processor based on the ARM architecture is used in the handheld. You can’t normally install Windows on it. However, Ayn Technologies had stated that they supported “Windows on ARM”. This means that with a bit of skill you can install a version of Windows that supports this architecture.

Who is the device aimed at? The Odin Pro is clearly not a replacement for a gaming PC. Android limits you too much for that. However, if you are looking for a device with which you can use streaming services such as Game Pass or GeForce Now, then the Odin Pro could become an insider tip.

And above all, the device could also be an alternative for people who want to play old classics from the PS2 or Dreamcast era again.

With the Odin Pro you can get ancient classics up and running without much effort

What is the special feature? You can easily download and install various emulators from the Google PlayStore. How well the emulators run on the Odin Pro is shown by John Walker, who writes for the news magazine Kotaku (via kotaku.com).

What is an emulator? An emulator provides a kind of virtual operating system. This allows you to run games or software that are incompatible with the actual OS. For example, you can play PlayStation games on Windows. Emulators are legal, but the software they use is often not – especially if you don’t own the games.

In his short test, he tried out games for the N64, the PS2 and the Dreamcast. The games all ran smoothly and with a stable frame rate, but not without problems. For example, Spider Man 2 from the PS2 struggled with graphic glitches. GoldenEye from the N64 era also played a little strangely with the Odin Pro controller.

However, another game, Crash Bandicoot, runs very well on the device, according to another tester.

So if you want to dig into your past and relive the early 2000s, the Odin Pro could be a good base for emulators.
