Car from Back to the Future: This is what the new Delorean Alpha 5 looks like

from Claus Ludewig
The Delorean Alpha 5 is the official successor to the legendary DMC-12 made famous in the Back to the Future trilogy. Now the manufacturer has published the first pictures of the Alpha 5.

In 1985, the sci-fi film Back to the Future premiered. There were three parts in all, in which Marty McFly and his friend Dr. Emmett Brown time traveled between the years 1885 and 2015. Commercial success for Robert Zemeckis’ first film then led to two Back to the Future sequels in 1989 and 1990. The DeLorean DMC-12 became famous as a time machine in the films. The DeLorean Motor Company recently announced that it would present the legendary vehicle as an electric car on August 18th. In the meantime, the company has published the first drafts of the upcoming Delorean Alpha 5 in advance.

Only the rear is reminiscent of the Delorean from Back to the Future

With the Alpha 5, the legendary DMC-12 is to have a successor. Similar to the cult car from the 1980s, the Italian designer Giorgio Giugario is also responsible for the design of the new Delorean. At the rear, the cat stairs are intended to resemble the hood cover of the DMC-12, otherwise the Alpha 5 looks independent. The Delorean Alpha 5 stretches out to around five meters and crouches on the road at just 1.37 meters high. The short wheelbase of just 2.3 meters in relation to the overall length is unusual for an electric car. According to the manufacturer, the battery capacity is at least 100 kilowatt hours, so the range should be over 483 kilometers (300 miles). Delorean specifies a top speed of 250 km/h. The Delorean Alpha 5 accelerates from a standing start to 60 miles per hour in around three seconds. The prices are assumed to be at least 175,000 euros, only 88 vehicles are to be built. If all goes well, production will start in 2024.

Originally it was planned to manufacture an electric car from old parts, but this plan failed, so that the Delorean Motor Company decided to create a new design. The new DeLorean Motor Company is based in Houston, Texas (USA) and takes care of the Restoration of old DMC-12. John DeLorean’s original company, on the other hand, hasn’t existed for years. If the new owners have their way, there should be other new models after the Alpha 5 electric coupe. For example, a coupé with a V8 engine is planned, as well as a fully electric sedan.
