Developers reveal why Diablo Immortal will also appear on PC
On June 2nd from 7:00 p.m. our time you can plunge into a new Diablo adventure. Then Diablo Immortal will be released for PC as well as iOS and Android devices. Ahead of the game’s launch, the creators of website WoWHead had a chance to speak with Diablo Immortal’s General Manager Rod Fergusson and Principal Game Designer Joe Grubb.
In the interview, the two developers reveal more about PvP in the new Diablo part, how the game feels on mobile, why they decided to release it on PC and much more. Below is the summary of the interview.
accessibility
The overall goal was to keep the system specifications reasonable throughout. Mobile is one of the biggest gaming platforms in the world and Diablo is a very popular franchise. Therefore, the goal is to allow as many people as possible to play, aided by PC support. The recently released Accessibility blog contains more details on these features.
The design on mobile devices
Mobile devices offer more direct control over the character, which can provide a more immersive gameplay experience compared to traditional point-and-click mechanics. While the intent is to give players the ability to do something meaningful in just five minutes while waiting in line, for example, or play for hours on long weekends, that was it average length of the beta session at 45 minutes, which was important feedback for the decision to release the game on PC as wellfor those who enjoy longer gaming sessions at home.
Iterative tuning and the release process
One of the main aspects of the alpha and beta feedback was seeing how players experience the game, where they spend their time and who they do it with, which allowed the team to respond to key areas of the game through iteration.
For example, several changes were made to PvP over the course of testing. The Cycle of Strive is a large-scale one Endgame PvP activity that proved to be much more popular than expected, as more people wanted to get involved and there was a desire for a permanent social structure. As a result, the “Shadow War” was added to make the activity clan based.
This feedback also related to the decision to use a PC client. One interesting comment read, “We had to make it on PC first in order to develop it for mobile”, so apparently it wasn’t as big of a leap as some people thought. Again, the main idea here was that you can play the game however you want, including the ability to play alone or with a group of friends, form a group for a specific adventure, or just team up with random adventurers in the world cooperate.
Character Customization
Character customization is surprisingly extensive for a mobile game, with many menu levels and everything that goes with it, from skin color to facial features and tattoos. It has been noted that the game uses a more “painterly” art style for 2D portraits, as in the quest dialogs, that doesn’t pick up on the 3D customization. It is believed that this could be a little confusing as while you can drastically change your appearance it will not be reflected in your portrait.
Class Mechanics and Class Switching
Post release there will be tools to switch classes, and of course you can play multiple characters (but there will be no trading between characters). Most people will want to pick a class and dig deep, but with options like improved matchmaking, group play, and especially in PvP, it’s all many on many. So all classes should be viable.
If you switch classes, you’ll go through the entire customization process all over again, but keep your character and Paragon level. You also get a base set of gear, as most gear is class-specific. This is to help players who started with a certain class and aren’t comfortable so they can try a different class. However, if you try a new class and decide you’d rather return to your old class, the full gear and items will remain. Are you watching Diablo Immortal (buy now ) from June 2nd?
