The use of “cheat codes” in video games, commonly known as cheating, is almost de rigueur in Germany. As a study by the opinion research institute Yougov on behalf of the PR agency Hotwire found, almost 60 percent of German gamers have already resorted to the use of cheats.
Among the gamers surveyed, 38.24% said they only cheat in single-player games, 10.20% only cheat in multiplayer titles, and 10.69% resort to assist in both single- and multiplayer titles form of cheat codes.
The main reason for using cheats seems to be slow progress in games. More than a third of all cheaters stated that they wanted to progress faster in the game by doing so. The other most frequently mentioned reasons are the search for a new gaming experience and too high a level of difficulty. However, more than one in ten also stated that the game was too easy without the use of cheats.
However, many cheaters seem to be ashamed of using the game aids. More than 35 percent do not tell their fellow players and friends about the cheats. The main reason is the fear of being labeled as a bad ending. Cheats are often frowned upon in the environment, which is why cheating is kept to yourself.
The study was conducted by Yougov in April 2022 on 1033 respondents who were selected to be representative of the population by age, gender and region.
