Shooting Swans with Cannons: Shenmue Creator Makes a New Space Harrier…

After Shenmue 3 didn’t hit everyone as well as fans of the series might have hoped, Yu Suzuki is taking a break from action-adventures and reviving a different concept he helped create.

Air Twister is a fantasy-esque twist on the legendary Space Harrier, coming June 24th exclusively to Apple Arcade.

And the game looks – and sounds – absolutely insane in the first trailer. You better see for yourself, because words will fail to describe this (I’ll try anyway):

The concept of the game is like Space Harrier like one egg to the next: your character flies in the foreground, enemies and projectiles are racing towards you from the depths of the room, and you have to shoot them down. It’s just that it’s much more aloof here than it was in the arcade: someone who looks like Zero Suit Samus flies into the screen sometimes alone, sometimes on a huge swan and shoots at bony dragons while flying between huge mushrooms and floating castles and laser-spitting metal carp.

It’s accompanied by a baroque Queen parody (research shows it’s Dutch multi-instrumentalist Valensia) that’s equal parts trashy and intriguing, I can’t get it out of my head for the rest of the week. I don’t think this will be part of the official soundtrack, but one can hope.

It doesn’t look like a big budget what’s going on there, and YS Net is welcome to rework a few of the fonts and HUD displays. But I’d be lying if I said this didn’t look insane in the best way. I feel like it.

Like Yu Suzuki game spot revealed, Air Twister is based on a fantasy shooting game that has been buzzing around in his head since the 80s and – due to technical limitations – then formed the basis for Space Harrier.

“This is my ideal fantasy shooting game,” says Suzuki. “I think when you play it, you’ll see that it feels distinctly different.”

To ask?

20 enemy types and ten bosses await you in the twelve levels of the game. As you collect stars, you unlock more game modes. Ranking lists, on which I will immortalize myself at 12,465 place, complete the package.

The game comes out of the box with swipe controls, where you slide your finger over enemies to mark them for the homing projectiles. However, you will also be able to gamble in the classic way with a controller.
