Streamer almost ruined his life with Twitch, now signs a coveted exclusive contract

Australian streamer “Whippy” risked a career on Twitch. He streamed for more audiences at night, almost ruined his life and health to succeed on the streaming platform and made the breakthrough. MeinMMO shows you his story.

A career as a streamer on Twitch is not a sure thing. It takes a lot of commitment, assertiveness, patience and a certain “personality”. Even then, a good portion of luck and a lot of time are required.

Twitch streamer “Whippy” did it. The 22-year-old Australian had a plan and the will to succeed. His story shows that it is possible – but also the risks some people take in order to achieve their dream.

“Sometimes I didn’t see the sun for days”

In an interview with Dot Esports, Whippy opened up about his life before Twitch. At school he was always “the stupid kid” and that bothered him a lot later on. He had the feeling: “Nothing will come of me”.

Living in rural New South Wales, Australia, Whippy found himself in a job he didn’t like and had a hefty mortgage to pay off.

He started his streaming career in a seedy shed. The windows were sealed with garbage bags and there was no trace of insulation. The summers were hot, the winters cold.

His plan was to reach the large American audience. And that was a kind of unique selling proposition. As an Australian, he speaks the mother tongue of the Americans, but grew up in a different culture.

However, to pursue his dream, Whippy had to turn his life upside down and stream at night. He was live from 10pm to 9am. “Sometimes I didn’t see the sun for days,” he says.

Another country streamer who has made a breakthrough is Tyler1. More about this in our video:

It was all wrong – It honestly ruined my life

In addition, his internet connection was not ideal for streaming. He had to pay AUD 1 per gigabyte for his streaming – 1 Australian dollar is currently about 0.67 euro cents. There are often a few dozen gigabytes per session.

Things hardly went well at Whippy for the first two years: “I was in the wrong time zone, had the wrong internet. It was all wrong. […] It honestly ruined my life” – His wallet suffered, as did his health.

He also supported his mother with her debts, Whippy explained in a clip:

But Whippy really wanted success. He was at a crossroads: accept the situation or keep hoping for that one moment of happiness. And that moment should come.

Roleplaying in GTA 5 brings the turning point

Due to his stagnant but already existing fan base, Whippy made it onto the well-known GTA roleplay server “No Pixel 3.0”. Here he played with streaming greats like xQc, Valkyrae and Sodapoppin.

And GTA roleplay should explode on Twitch during this time. Whippy had experience with GTA roleplay and the stories of his two main characters were well received – they are both Australians, by the way: Irwin Dundee, a drug-addicted crime boss and Crocodile Steve, the pettiest cop on the whole server.

His numbers on Twitch were through the roof. While in January 2021 an average of just over 850 people watched his streams, in April 2021 it averaged over 6,600 viewers (via twitchtracker.com).

His numbers have gone down a bit since then, but it’s enough for a good life. Whippy moved from the countryside to the city of Brisbane.

The streamer is now simply grateful for his achievements and the support of his community:

If you had told me a few years ago that I would get so many viewers, such a community, I would have laughed at you. “Yes, exactly” I would have said. And it makes me so happy now that they are here.

Even now I still think it could be over at any time. But I’m also so thankful to have this community.

He feels at home in his stream, his chat is his best friend. Whippy did it and, in addition to his contract with Twitch, announces another milestone in his life: he was able to pay off his mother’s mortgage: “I’ve made something of my life”.
