What is actually the story of Diablo Immortal and why do we meet well-known NPCs?

Shortly before the release of Diablo Immortal, Blizzard revealed more about the story of the new MMO. MeinMMO summarizes the new information for you and weaves it into the previously known background of Diablo Immortal. Warning, spoilers ahead!

When is Diablo Immortal playing? Immortal is a sequel to Diablo 2, so it takes place between the second and third parts of the series. We now know thanks to a new blog post: 20 years have passed since we defeated Baal in Lord of Destruction.

This also explains why we meet many old acquaintances from earlier parts again. Familiar faces include:

• Charsi, the blacksmith from Diablo 2, who is also available in Immortal with her hammer
• Deckard Cain, the famous storyteller who is now the foremost scholar
• Rayek, a barbarian who created the Reliquary of Hell (“Helliquary”)

If you’re wondering how they stayed so young: In Diablo, humans are actually nephalem, the descendants of angels and demons. They stole the Worldstone to create Sanctuario, a “safe world” where they are spared from the Eternal Conflict between Heaven and Hell. It just didn’t work out so well…

After Diablo 2, the world is broken – even more than usual

What happened? Baal got his hands on the Worldstone and tried to corrupt it. He didn’t quite succeed, because in Lord of Destruction he was defeated and Tyrael destroyed the Corrupted Stone.

However, as a result, shards were scattered far and wide and the “essence of the world and all of its inhabitants” changed. Some of the chunks can “distort reality itself.” Also, Sanctuario is no longer protected. Angels and demons now have a clear view of the human world. This is where Diablo Immortal comes in.

The new world and the powerful World Stone, which can create entire worlds, attract new villains. Among them is Skarn, a demon lord that even Deckard Cain has never met. Skarn, the Harbinger of Terror, is Immortal’s major antagonist – so far.

What is our task? We have to sort of clean up now. There are fragments of the world stone lying around everywhere, which we have to collect and secure somehow. Like radioactive waste that needs to be shipped to secure containers.

In the course of the campaign we also meet old villains again, such as Leoric or the Countess. The Worldstone has obviously done a great job. When we are “done” with that, our task is not over yet.

We’re supposed to keep Sanctuary safe. In addition, the strongest nephalem should represent something like the protective shield for the world: the immortals (“Immortals”). This is where Diablo Immortal’s big feature, the Cycle of Strife, comes into play.

To keep the immortals from slipping, the “shadows” keep attacking them – the second faction of the nephalem. They test the immortals to see if they really are the best possible defenders.

Diablo 4 is getting “even darker”

Exactly how the endless circle of trials finally progresses to Diablo 3, where corruption still warps the world, we don’t know. However, Immortal is also scheduled to run for quite a while – enough time to tell the story.

However, there is already a small preview of what will happen afterwards. The corruption from the destroyed Worldstone seems to be spreading further, so far that Diablo 4 is even darker. However, we don’t know exactly what the developers mean by “even darker”.

As soon as more of the story of Diablo Immortal and Diablo 4 is revealed, we will of course keep you posted.
