True fan service: Over 25 years of cult adventures are getting a Steam update

from Thilo Bayer
Who doesn’t know them, the cult retro adventures Little Big Adventure. For the 25th birthday of part 2 there was now a Steam update and the 28 (!) year old first part was also updated – that’s fan service.

Thanks to remakes and remasters, retro games are on the rise again, and adventure fans in particular should look forward to the release of Return to Monkey Island. Anyone who was already active on the PC in the 90s or is generally interested in retro games should have heard of Little Big Adventure (not to be confused with Little Big Planet). The two classics by the French developer Adeline Software are to be reissued as a remake.

Two updates for classics

Part 2 of the series, Little Big Adventure 2 – Twinsen’s Odyssey, was originally released on 05/31/1997, a little over 25 years ago. The isometric adventure with 3D polygon models has a fitting birthday an update on Steam which includes some nice upgrades like menu language selection, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud Saves, Controller support and New Game Plus. There is also support for Windows mode and switching the automatically centered camera on or off outdoors.

The first part of the series, Little Big Adventure: Twinsen’s Adventure, also has one Update on Steam to get. The retro-adventure originally came out on Oct. 14, 1994, so doesn’t have a specific anniversary, but it has almost the same nice updates – with one exception. Instead of the function for the camera, there is a convenience function to optionally switch off “Hit by walls”. In any case, it is absolutely unusual that such old titles are still provided with contemporary updates.

This of course raises the question of who is responsible for the nice updates. Behind it is no longer the original developer, but with “2.21” a company that is at least connected to Adeline Software, since the co-founder was also an obstetrician for Adeline. The studio actually wanted to develop a third part, but in the meantime they have changed their mind and want to revise the two classics and start in time for the 30th birthday of the first part in 2024.
