[PLUS] Power supply test: 850 watts for powerful graphics cards and CPUs

[PLUS] Power supply test 850 watts II (2)

850 watts, the second!

Don’t be surprised, the power supply department is actually in a state of upheaval. With a new pen, you can expect more detailed explanations and changes in assessments, including classifications for the otherwise rather dry power heart of every computer. Would you like more attention to be paid to an aspect of power supplies or would you like to give other feedback? Then please let us know – either via a comment in the forum at www.pcgh.de/feedback or alternatively by email to [email protected]. According to the latest survey results in the PCGH Quickpoll forum, the second part of the 850 watt performance class in the gold and platinum segment is a shallow start. In view of the increasingly power-hungry trend towards high-performance graphics cards such as the RTX 3080 and fast CPUs such as Intel’s i7-12700K, the continued interest should hardly come as a surprise.

Seven power supplies in the check – from premium to inexpensive

The specified 80-plus efficiency classes gold and platinum not only rub against each other very closely in theory, but also compete directly with each other on the free market. While gold power supplies are often cheaper to get hold of, platinum offshoots score not only with inherently higher efficiency but also with supposedly better processing of the built-in components and topologies. In the end, personal preferences and the budget decide in which direction it is allowed to go within a performance class. In our tests, the cheaper offshoots did not always automatically turn out to be worse, and almost all fully modular power supplies tested here have valid advantages and disadvantages in comparison – details that have not been mentioned, such as measured cable lengths, are listed in our test tables at the end.
