Buy individual parts, assemble them, install Windows – the path to your own PC is actually easy if it weren’t for the fine-tuning. Mainboard manufacturers are expanding their UEFIs year after year, with each generation new features are added, and the overview is dwindling. In this article, we explain how to optimize the UEFI and which settings do what and what you should pay attention to, also with a view to the Windows installation.

The BIOS and UEFI Confusion

First of all, something fundamental: when we talk about BIOS, we usually mean UEFI. Although the two firmwares have nothing in common apart from the basic functions, the term UEFI is rarely used in forums and in everyday language. Very few know the main differences between the firmwares, because these go far beyond the (optional) use of a graphic instead of text-based interface. BIOSes still initialize all components sequentially, while UEFI work simultaneously and thus enable a much faster start. They also come with Secure Boot, which can prevent malware from running before the operating system starts. In secure mode, all but the UEFI boot loader are disabled.
