DDR5 RAM: Prices drop significantly, 32 GB from 150 euros

from Valentin Sattler
In the last few weeks and months, the DDR5 kits available on the market have dropped significantly in price. The cheapest DDR5 RAM is currently available for 4.68 euros per GB, while DDR4 memory requires at least 2.72 euros per GB.

Ever since Intel introduced the first Alder Lake processors six months ago, the variety of DDR5 products has continued to increase. However, the new memory standard will probably not really establish itself until the end of this year, when all desktop and server processors from AMD and Intel will use the new standard.

Positive price development

A pleasing development is already becoming apparent in advance, because DDR5 RAM has become increasingly cheaper in recent weeks and months. The currently cheapest kit in the PCGH price comparison – 32 GB DDR5-4800 from Kingston – has fallen from just under 200 to just 150 euros compared to the beginning of May. The situation is similar with other kits and manufacturers. For example, the price of G.Skills Trident Z5 memory (32 GB, DDR5-5600) dropped significantly last month, from 360 to just 265 euros.

Before the new Core and Ryzen processors come onto the market, switching to the new storage technology will be much more attractive. The background might be that DDR4 RAM is, so to speak, a phased-out model: by next year most or even all PC platforms will be based on DDR5. Accordingly, the RAM manufacturers are likely to increasingly switch their production, which leads to better availability and the lower prices that can be observed.

So far, at least, DDR4 RAM is still cheaper than DDR5 memory. The cheapest kits are already available here for 2.72 euros per GB, while newer DDR5 kits require at least 4.68 euros per GB. However, compared to the prices at the end of the year (11.25 euros per GB), this is already a significant improvement, and hopefully the prices will fall even further until the release of the Core 13000 and Ryzen 7000 processors.
