I bought a gaming tablet for €250 just for Diablo Immortal - but you shouldn't be doing this

Shortly before the release of Diablo Immortal, MeinMMO editor bought a new tablet. Only for the new game released on iOS, Android and PC. He’s happy with his investment, but wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

What kind of tablet is this? Shortly before the surprisingly earlier release of Diablo Immortal, I bought the TECLAST M40 Pro, a Chinese product.

I am not a tech expert like my colleague Benedikt. For me, the choice was relatively easy: I wanted a gaming tablet and I bought one that was reasonably priced and had good reviews.

In addition, mobile gaming is much more widespread in China than in the West, which is why I simply trust the expertise of the manufacturers here. That’s why I quickly came to the TECLAST M40 Pro as a “simple consumer”. Here are some technical data about the device:

weight 548g
operating system Android 11
display diagonal 10″ (25.4cm)
resolution 1920x1200px
processor Unisoc (2 Ghz, 8 cores)
Duration 8 hours
R.A.M. 6GB DDR4
Storage 128GB

And what did you buy that for? Originally, I simply wanted to test the game on multiple platforms. I had early access, which allowed me to bring you my review of the Diablo Immortal shop. The test only ran on mobile devices, not on the PC.

The decision wasn’t made until after I played. I just wanted to see how Diablo Immortal looks on a bigger screen and how it plays on mobile with a controller. So I spent €250, bought some accessories and got started.

Here’s everything you need to know about Diablo Immortal in 3 minutes:

Diablo Immortal on Tablet – Is it Worth It?

First of all, I am completely satisfied with the tablet. You can still see enough on the screen when sitting at the desk to gamble comfortably and it remains small enough to simply disappear in a backpack or laptop bag.

So why am I now advising against buying a gaming tablet for Diablo Immortal? The question is not easy to answer – so I’ll just present you my experience with pros and cons. For comparison: my smartphone is a Redmi Note 9S.

Per

  • Pleasant to play during longer sessions
  • Feels like a cool gaming station to go
cons

  • Touch controls are better on mobile
  • In my case, optics are not really an upgrade
  • Controller control still needs refinement

What I like about the tablet: The tablet can be easily set up together with the corresponding case made of imitation leather. It serves as a small gaming station, anytime, anywhere. That alone is a big plus point that I appreciate very much about the purchase.

The operation is also very easy. The setup only takes a few minutes thanks to the cloud connection with my Google account and backup. Many apps are not preinstalled. So Immortal is quick and easy to start.

Why do I still advise against buying it? I had 3 main criteria that made me want to try the tablet:

The point of convenience is fully met. The other two don’t. Immortal doesn’t look much better on a tablet than it does on a phone, and the UI scales with it too. So you can’t see much more.

The TECLAST M40 Pro also does not allow any real graphic update. 60 FPS or high resolution is “not available on this device”. Only the level of detail can be increased at the expense of the battery.

The control with the controller in Diablo Immortal is not yet sophisticated enough for my taste. Many UI elements must be selected by “drag” and cannot be selected by switching.

Aiming with skills is also much more difficult with the sticks than with the touch controls of the smartphone. Touch feels really good in Immortal. The Xbox Series X Elite controller’s sticks are too fast, though. Despite experimenting, I haven’t found the right settings yet.

If you really want to play with a controller on the go, I recommend a smartphone with Razer Kishi. My colleague Benedikt Schlotmann has had good experiences with the controller and it is cheaper overall. If you want to take a look for yourself, this is currently my tablet setup:

If you play on the PC, you don’t really need the tablet

All the advantages that I have with the tablet, I can also enjoy with the PC. A larger screen, actually better graphics and more comfortable sitting in the usual setup. The only drawback here: the client is still in beta at the time of release, so it can be buggy.

However, there were also serious problems with the mobile release on many systems. So many that Diablo Immortal has been temporarily removed from some stores.

So I could have saved the €250, but Diablo Immortal wasn’t released for PC until a day later and I was impatient. So now I have my tablet for mobile games and more.

For me, the purchase wasn’t necessarily a mistake, but I wouldn’t advise anyone to just get a tablet for Diablo Immortal. The situation is different if you can also use such a device for other purposes.

€250 – Not a bad investment if you use it more often

In conclusion, I would like to say that I do not regret the purchase. In the end, the tablet isn’t worth it just to use it for Diablo Immortal. But since I’ve been toying with the idea for a while anyway, the new game was the ideal excuse for my purchase.

I find tablets quite useful for reading longer texts on the go, for other games or simply for video chats with the family. They close the gap between laptop and mobile phone.

I’ll definitely be using my new TECLAST more often – primarily for Diablo Immortal, but in the medium term I’m sure I’ll also be on the go. For example, when trade fairs like gamescom are coming up again.

Until that happens, though, I’ll probably just keep playing on PC and watching more of Diablo Immortal and Endgame. After all, the game should continue to develop strongly in the future, as the bosses already told me:
