Diablo Immortal on Switch, PS4/PS5 and Xbox Series X – Information on the possible console release

Since June 2, 2022 you can play the new action MMO Diablo Immortal on PC, iOS and Android. The game aims to bring the typical hack and slash gameplay to mobile devices. So you can kill a lot of opponents and then collect loot.

So far, no version for consoles is planned, but there are indications

Is Diablo Immortal coming to Switch, PS5 and Xbox? If you’re hoping for a version for the consoles after the release of Diablo Immortal, we’ll have to disappoint you first. Because according to Peiwen Yao (Executive Producer of Diablo Immortal) no console version is planned yet. In an interview with MeinMMO he explains:

We’re coming to mobile and PC, and controller support is intended for those two platforms. We don’t have anything console-related for you right now.

Isn’t the game coming to consoles? Incidentally, the developers had not completely ruled it out. As explained by Blizzard’s Franchise General Manager Rod Fergusson:

I would like to note that controller support and console support are very different things. Basically, I’m a never-says-never type of person, but we don’t have anything to announce or talk about today.

What speaks for a console version anyway? At the moment you can play all the big games in the Diablo series – Diablo 3 and Diablo 2: Resurrected – on the consoles as well. Some therefore consider it likely that Diablo Immortal could also come to consoles. In the end, the developers want to make a release dependent on the success of the game.

In addition, Blizzard surprised many gamers with the release on the PC. Because many had assumed that the new Diablo game could only be played on mobile phones. In a stream, Wyatt Cheng, the game director, also stated that Diablo Immortal would be an AAA game that should be accessible to as many players as possible. It’s supposed to be the biggest Diablo ever. This statement also suggests that a version for Switch, PS4, PS5 and Xbox is not unreasonable.

The action MMO also offers extensive controller support on PC, Android and iOS. For many users it is not a big step for a port for the consoles.

However, we think it is very unlikely that Diablo Immortal will be released soon for Switch, PS5 and Xbox. Because the focus of development is clearly on mobile devices, which is also shown by the current beta on the PC.

When might a console version come out? Definitely not 2022. 2023 at the earliest and that’s not certain either. The developers had already stated before the release that the focus would remain on mobile devices: they wanted players to have a better experience on the PC than with an emulator and during development it was said that Diablo Immortal was being developed for mobile.

This is also noticeable in the current PC version. Because although Diablo Immortal was released on June 2nd, you can only play an open beta on the PC. This means that many systems are still being tested here and errors can occur. The hack-and-slash game also lacks some comfort functions that we know from real PC MMORPGs.
