Diablo Immortal's user score on Metacritic has plummeted

Diablo Immortal secures a place on the podium of Blizzard titles with the worst user scores on Metacritic.

Almost the lowest user score rating in Blizzard history

Although Diablo Immortal actually does quite well with a Metascore of 79 points, players give the new mobile and PC title a bad one user rating after the other. The game is now at 0.6 points. The gameplay itself is not the reason for the red number.

Incidentally, Immortal shares the second lowest user score with Warcraft III Reforged. Only World of Warcraft Classic: Burning Crusade Classic is (even) worse off with 0.4 points. Blizzard apparently has a knack for making users mad at their games.

This time, the reason for the recently released free-to-play MMO’s drastically falling User Score value is its microtransactions.

Monetization is the problem

When Diablo Immortal came out on June 2nd, all was right with the world. Many, including Martin and myself, were pleasantly surprised by the outcome of this “April Fool’s joke” and you don’t have to worry about in-game purchases for hours of play. Unfortunately, this feeling didn’t last long for many players, because especially in the endgame it’s difficult to keep up without real money purchases.

To fully upgrade a character, a player should be able to spend up to $110,000. The fans didn’t like this approach at all and without further ado the players punished Blizzard with the underground player score.

The many positive ratings on Google Play or in the App Store – here Diablo Immortal has achieved over 4 points out of 5 – indicate that the problems with monetization will only appear later.

One user writes in his review on Metacritic: “It would be a pretty good game, but unfortunately at later stages the pressure to spend real money increases.”

“In a game that revolves around gear, the ability to pay for the best gear breaks the game, especially in PvP, but also when you want to compare your skills to other players. It’s a pretty depressing experience .”

on reddit and Twitter, the players share this opinion. Below level 50, the game still feels F2P-friendly, from level 50 Diablo Immortal gets serious and the fun is gone – unless you spend tons of money.
