Quietly and secretly: Square Enix announces new Just Cause title

Just Cause: Mobile

Square Enix has almost been silent and secret Just Cause 5 announced. Or at least that one new open-world title of the Just Cause franchise is in development. This news was not announced to fans at a big event like this Summer Game Fest announced but mentioned in an investor briefing.

New Just Cause in development

This news of a new Just Cause game was spotted by a pair of eagle eyes on the website resetera discovered. There a user has an excerpt from the Investor briefing published by Square Enix. The said briefing was for the fiscal year 2022, which has just ended. “Our filings provide an overview and details of the transaction, but I would like to note that the primary purpose of the transaction was a realignment of our portfolio”says the briefing report, which details the recent and surprisingly cheap sale of a number of Square Enix IPs and studios.

“We have reviewed our studio and title portfolio specifically to strengthen our offering of online titles that we are developing for the North American and European markets. We intend to focus on developing new titles that fit our strategy, including those utilizing new IPs. The Just Cause franchise will remain our IP and we are working on developing a new title in the franchise.”

Will Avalanche Studios develop again?

Square Enix confirmed last May that the company sold many of its western studios to Embracer Groupincluding brands like deus ex and Tomb Raider. The Just Cause and Rage 2 developer Avalanche Studios was not part of the sale as Square Enix does not own it, but the “Just Cause” IP does belong to the publisher.
