Project M: Trailer for the ‘interactive film’ impresses with realistic optics

Project M is still in a very early stage of development, but the South Korean studio NCSoft (including Guild Wars 2) wants to give us a foretaste of what awaits us in the game at some point with a first trailer and bits of information.

First Project M trailer presents technical progress

If you look at the Project M trailer above, you will immediately notice the impressive visuals. No wonder, since NCSoft relied on the Unreal Engine 5 for this. To further underscore the tech, comparative scenes between the game and tech like motion capture and 3D scanning are built into the trailer.

With these and other techniques, NCSoft wants to offer us “photorealistic graphics, cinematic production and detailed facial expressions and movements of the characters” in Project M, as it is in a press release called. And what shall we say? The result can be seen in the trailer.

What kind of game is Project M anyway?

But we are not only offered something visually, there is also gameplay to see: Similar to Quantic Dream’s games, Project M will feature a cinematic experience with quick time events and choices that determine which ending we reach.

And the story? It’s about a man who – after an explosion? – wants to avenge the death of his wife or at least is struggling with whether he should go down this path. In the trailer he talks to his wife “hypothetically” about what she would think if he avenged her death. Perhaps the dichotomy between desire and rejection for revenge will even become the crucial theme of the story?

Together with the scenes shown, which also show the common child and SciFi elements such as the cube, Project M looks stylistically like a mixture of Quantic Dreams Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human. Dark, action-packed and with a strong staging, we can certainly count on it if the trailer keeps what it promises.

When and on which platforms will Project M be released? So far, apart from “for console”, it is not known when and for which platforms Project M will appear. The gameplay shown indicates a PlayStation version through the buttons. However, due to the high technical requirements, we can probably assume that the game will only be released for the PS5 and no longer for the PS4.
