TESO: Developer Tips and Strategies for Glory Story Card Game
As is well known, June 6th, 2022 is that new chapters High Isle on PC/Mac/Stadia for The Elder Scrolls Online appeared. Release on PlayStation and Xbox will follow on June 21st. One particularly fun feature of the chapter had already kept us entertained for several hours on the public test server (and it’s no different on the live servers at the moment): the glory stories. Behind the unwieldy name is a new in-game card game that you can play against NPCs and other players – including quests, special rewards and rankings.
General information about the fame stories
We already gave you the basics in the article 10 things you should know about the new card game summarized. If you prefer to watch videos, we also have something for you:
In addition, there’s a detailed Presentation of the four cartridges and their decks of cardswhich play a crucial role in the fame stories.
Favorite strategies of TESO developers
in one new article on the official website the TESO developers recently explained their favorite strategies to you, and there are a few tips on top of that.
Senior Systems Designer John Carlson
“If I get to choose first, I always choose Celarus. This way I keep my options open and can respond to my opponent’s choice of patron with my second choice.”explains Carlson. “Otherwise, I’m happy to go to Ansei Frandar Hunding for his patronage.“
Hunding can give you a head start, especially early on, by granting you an extra Thaler per turn while you’re in his favor. A great bonus if you strive to always have enough munny to afford the cards you want in the tavern. Hunding’s cards also provide you with the much-needed power for a direct path to victory.
“In general, you’ll always want as many cards as possible from just one Patron or the other, but if you can have both then I’m particularly leaning towards Celarus early in the game and its ability to weed out Thalers and other cards. I then use these to collect Hunding’s cards, which later grant a lot of power. You can use any Hunding actor or use The Den of Dreams twice to allow you to play a powerful hand each turn. I think ‘The Cave of Dreams’ is my favorite card of all decks.“
“The Den of Dreams” is a particularly interesting and powerful choice, as you can look at the next four cards in your draw deck and optionally put up to four of them straight into your discard. “No-Shira-Poet”, on the other hand, returns a card from your discard to your draw pile. Both are particularly useful when you want to make sure you pull off specific combos on the following turn.
Associate UI Engineer Matthew Haworth
“I have some bias towards the Delmene Hlaalu and Wizard King Orgnum decks, as they are fairly straightforward, which suits my less in-depth approach to gamingsays Haworth. “I’m not particularly patient, so I value the Hlaalu’s early munny perk to get what I need from the tavern. Orgnum’s card combos by themselves grant a lot of direct standing, which allows me to ignore taunting agents (unless they have particularly annoying abilities).“
With the steady income from House Hlaalu, I switch focus to Orgnum’s cards for a nimble point win with them. “Hlaalu provides the fuel for Orgnum’s fire. With Hlaalu’s Thalers and Orgnum’s ability to create cards right in my deck, it’s quite easy to get a big advantage in my deck size since Orgnum’s patron ability scales with it. With contracts like Currency Exchange or King Orgnum’s Guidance, I can trigger them multiple times for potentially game-changing gains in power.“
Both “Currency Swap” (as part of a combo) and “King Orgnum’s Guidance” allow you to get one more interaction with a Patron on your turn, which can result in a surprise reversal and sometimes maybe even a stolen Patron victory!
QA Tester Michael Nichols
“With Saint Pelin granting me power and the Duke of Crows granting me thalers, it’s always a good idea to have some cards from both decks, even if they’re weak, so I’m never short of anything late in the game“, explains Nichols. “The game can play out very differently depending on how much you bet on this or that: steady reputation gains with Pelin’s cards, or explosive late-game rushes with the Duke’s coins and patron ability. The right ratio depends on the opponent’s strategy!“
Play the right Duke of Crow cards, and it’s entirely possible to draw your entire deck in one turn, almost guaranteeing you to hit your combos.
“The Duke of Crow’s cards combo among themselves to stack up more bucks, but the extra cards drawn work with almost any deck. If I can afford the munny, I grab additional cards and then switch to the ones with more power, like Saint Pelin. The extra cards drawn keep my pressure up with the added power of combo bonuses to still give me that extra something.“
With cards like Gathering, Saint Pelin has no shortage of opportunities to gain power, and Duke of Crow’s cards (such as Screeching Oratorio) often grant might through combos. In the end, you need reputation to win, and one of the surest ways to get this is to accumulate power and let it convert at the end of the round. With the combination of Herzog and Pelin, Nichols has two possible paths to victory – smart!
