Callisto Protocol, Routine & Co.: SciFi horror is making a comeback, and what a comeback!

If there was one trend to be observed at Summer Game Fest, it was that there was a remarkably large number of horror games. And that could be narrowed down even more precisely, because the sci-fi horror in particular will celebrate a comeback in the coming months – into next year – that I personally would hardly have thought possible.

Of course, Dead Space started a small trend in 2008, and there have been offshoots of the genre ever since. But the abundance with which the sci-fi horror wave swept over us at the Summer Game Fest show was remarkable and made me, as a fan of such games, rejoice inwardly.

In case you don’t know exactly which games I mean, here they are:

The Callisto Protocol is surprisingly released in the new trailer in 2022

It only takes a few seconds to know exactly which game was the model for The Callisto Protocol: Because the parallels to Dead Space jump out at us here, just like the mutated creatures, which we of course have to defend ourselves with, with force of arms. The Callisto Protocol is scheduled for release later this year, on December 2, 2022.

Routine: Single player space horror with an 80’s vibe revealed

Not only SciFi horror in general is celebrating a comeback, but also routine in the very special. Because the title was originally announced 10 years ago and then disappeared completely. It’s good that it’s finally back, because the setting with the abandoned moon base where we meet terrifying robots is quite impressive. However, there is still one problem: A release date is still not routine.

Even if it is known that Fort Solis also frolics in the horror segment, something else was in the foreground when the title was announced. Both Troy Baker and Roger Clark have been confirmed as actors in the game, lending their voices to Joel from The Last of Us and Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2, respectively. On the other hand, apart from the Mars settings, in which we explore a huge station, not much is known about the game itself.

Aliens: Dark Descent

Aliens: Dark Descent – New shooter with masses of xenomorphs announced

Admittedly, Aliens: Dark Descent is certainly a bit more of a shooter than a pure horror game, but the mere presence and above all the mass of the famous alien creatures sends a shiver down my spine when I look at the trailer. Unlike the other representatives in this article, Dark Descent can also be used by several players in co-op.

Dead Space Remake – Join us for an atmospheric walk through the engine compartment

The Dead Space Remake didn’t have its own appearance at the Summer Game Fest, but as the biggest of all the names it hovers a bit above everything else. The developers at Motive Studios have given the game a particularly chic makeover for the new edition – both visually and acoustically – and some gameplay mechanics are also to be revised. And best of all: There is a release date. From the January 27, 2023 we may once again grapple with the nekormorphs in the dark corridors of the Ishimura.
