Activision talks about the future of Call of Duty and Warzone.

When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II launches on October 28th, it will mark a strategic shift for the franchise that will also introduce innovations around the popular battle royale game Call of Duty: Warzone.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 will be released shortly after the release of Modern Warfare II as an expansion of the game universe. To provide players with this state-of-the-art experience, Warzone 2.0 will feature new Modern Warfare II content and systems with all-new progressions and supplies.

Overarching engine and vision for COD titles

Going forward, all Call of Duty games will be developed on the same game engine introduced with the 2019 version of Modern Warfare. A newer version of this engine will power both Modern Warfare II and the new Warzone 2.0. In many ways this will be the most advanced engine ever used for Call of Duty.

Launched in 2020 and now boasting over 125 million players, Warzone is an important part of the new franchise strategy designed to better align and expand the many qualities and features of Call of Duty titles. Since the release of Warzone, resources surrounding Call of Duty have continued to ramp up; there are now over 3,000 employees working on the franchise.

Activision’s goal here is not only to improve the direction of the Modern Warfare franchise and make a significant shift, but also to think much bigger about the overall future of the Call of Duty franchise: A whole new and shared vision for Modern Warfare II as well as being consistent with a brand new ‘Warzone’ experience. Based on a common technology and the engine that combines the two in a way that players have never been able to experience before.

New insights into the game and campaign of Modern Warfare II

In celebration of this week’s official game reveal, Activision and Infinity Ward have now provided another look at the Modern Warfare II campaign.

The setting: Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, three special units are on speedboats on their way to an oil platform. Task Force 141 and Shadow Company must board the platform, take out enemy forces and defuse a missile… if their information is correct and the missile even exists.
