The Plucky Squire – A Magical Adventure for the Switch

Genre: Action Adventure Developer: All possible futures Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, PC release: 2023

So on Thursday evening I watch the Summer Game Fest for two hours with admittedly relatively little enthusiasm, and then I crash, only to find out the next morning that I missed what was for me the biggest highlight of the evening. I should have known better, after all, publisher Devolver Digital’s shows are usually the highlight of every event season. Or let’s put it this way: Here you will be surprised with cool ideas!

This was also the case the day before yesterday, when The Plucky Squire was announced as a truly enchanting adventure for consoles and PC that comes with a cool graphic twist.

Kicked out of the picture book

That’s what it’s about: The truly beautiful action-adventure tells the story of picture book hero Jot, who, as the hero of his own story, carries out a merciless fight against villain Humgrump. As you can see in the trailer, we first experience all of this by looking at a children’s book in 2D. What already looks excellent here due to the graphic style is topped only a few seconds later.

When Humgrump finds out that he’s going to be the loser of the story as a villain, he just kicks Jot off the sides and into the real 3D world. And at least here The Plucky Squire had me completely hooked.

Memories of It Takes Two come back.

Memories of It Takes Two come back.

A cool graphic twist: The colorful adventure, which reminds me a little bit of my co-op favorite It Takes Two with its Toy Story look, doesn’t just simply switch from 2D to 3D. Rather, it plays with the perspectives and lets us fight in a lunch box or in a cup. From time to time it even combines both views and you don’t see that in a game every day.

Watching the trailer of The Plucky Squire puts you in a good mood just by watching. Even as a purely 2D game, I’d probably have a good time with the children’s book adventure. But the fact that the perspectives are still being played with and a funny story rounds off the whole thing further fuels the anticipation of the release. Let’s hope that all of this will also play smoothly and that the developers will not quickly run out of breath or ideas with their cool twist.
