Forza Motorsport: Gran Turismo competitor coming in Spring 2023

from Claus Ludewig
Microsoft and developer studio Turn 10 showed off the new Forza Motorsport at Xbox Showcase 2022. The release period has also been mentioned.

The Forza Motorsport series of simulation-heavy racing games has been available on Xbox consoles since 2005. As a rule, there was a new part every two to three years. That streak ended with 2017’s Forza Motorsport 7. The seventh part is no longer available digitally, possibly due to licensing issues. The developers of Turn 10 have announced the successor for next year, which – currently – is simply called Forza Motorsport.

Raytracing also while driving & tire and fuel management

As part of the Xbox Showcase 2022, Dan Greenawalt also showed the first gameplay footage of the new Forza Motorsport. Compared to Forza Horizon 5, the in-house Forza Tech engine has been further developed so that real-time ray tracing is also possible while driving. In addition to shadows, there will also be reflections that are as realistic as possible, for example on other cars. A dynamic day/night change can be activated on all included routes. In addition to the optics, this also has an impact on the revised driving behavior. For example, the temperatures of the asphalt and the surrounding area drop at night, so that the grip of the cars also changes. The grip conditions on the track also change. The driving physics are said to have been completely revised. In addition to muscle cars and historic formula vehicles, the trailer also features GT racing cars and prototypes from the IMSA long-distance series.

For the improved optics, the team from the developer Turn 10 Studios uses 3D scans and photogrammetry for materials such as track boundaries or vegetation. In addition to the day/night change, there are also different weather conditions on all tracks in Forza Motorsport available. As previously announced, the new edition of Forza Motorsport will come with simulation and management of tires and fuel, as well as simulated pit stops. There will be different types of tires analogous to Formula 1. So you want to be more realistic than in Forza Motorsport 7, which drifted too much in the direction of the arcade. An improved damage model should also contribute to better immersion. In spring 2023, the new Forza Motorsport for PC will be released on Steam, the Microsoft Store and the Xbox Series X|S. PC Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass subscribers will be able to play the new Forza Motorsport at no extra cost. It is still unclear what the implementation for Xbox One will look like, the racing game may only be streamed to the console via Xbox Cloud Gaming in Xbox Game Pass.
