Is an open world RPG coming to Call of Duty?

According to Activision Blizzard, the announcement of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is intended to herald a “new era” for Call of Duty. The company may not have exaggerated with this statement, because loud a new job postingwhich has since been removed, an Infinity Ward studio is currently looking for a narrative director for a previously unannounced triple-A project.

Open-world RPG reportedly in development at Infinity Ward

The studio is the fairly new Polish studio of Infinity Ward, which also mainly works on Call of Duty. For example, the developers supported the work on the last two Modern Warfare offshoots. Also, Activision Blizzard is currently quite focused on their popular Call of Duty series, leading many fans to believe that the new game is another offshoot of the series.

The description of the job posting states that the new narrative director aims to provide “the best narrative and cinematic experience in an open-world role-playing game”. The main focus here should be on the plot, the characters, the world building, and the general lore. An open-world RPG would of course be a whole new direction for Call of Duty, but unless it’s a new Call of Duty spin-off, this would be the very first game Infinity Ward has ever worked on alongside Call of Duty Has.
