Pokémon Go: Android 6 will soon no longer be supported

Pokémon Go will soon end support for some older Android devices.

Devices still running Android 6 aka “Marshmallow” are affected. So if you want to continue playing Pokémon Go, you should either update your device or buy a new one.

No problem with nougat

All of this currently only affects users with Android 6. Apple users and Android users who use at least Android 7 aka “Nougat” can continue playing as usual.

If you want to check which version you have, go to the settings, to the menu item General and there to About.

Niantic justifies the change with the age of Android 6, which was released seven years ago, in 2015.

“Since then, significant improvements have been made to the Android operating systems,” it says. “By removing support for Android 6, we can streamline our development processes and focus on newer operating systems and technologies.”

“The vast majority of Android users have already moved to Android 7 and above. As gamers move from older OS versions to newer ones, we too regularly adjust the requirements for supported devices so that we can focus on the devices that serve the player base also used.”
