Intel introduced the CPU intended for the embedded market in 1989. Technically, it is a variant of the 80386SX, i.e. the cost-optimized variant of the original 80386(DX) equipped with a 16-bit data bus, including two special features: The processor does not support real mode, but boots directly in protected mode, the Intel introduced with the 80286. Also, the chip’s MMU (Memory Management Unit) lacks paging support. Compared to an 80386, the amount of executable software is therefore reduced.
