Self-built: PS5 becomes a 2 cm thin Waku PS5 Slim

from Oliver Jaeger
The operator of the YouTube channel “DIY Perks” has built his own Playstation 5 Slim and equipped it with a water cooling system. Compared to the Digital Edition of the PlayStation 5, which is 92mm thick, the Youtuber’s “PS5 Slim” is just 20mm, a reduction of 78 percent.

Sony’s Playstation 5 is among the chunkiest consoles the company has ever made. The original version measures 390 x 260 x 104mm, while the digital edition is 92mm thick. The electronics group from South Korea usually decides to launch thinner versions of its consoles a few years after the release. A Youtuber called “DIY Perks” didn’t want to wait that long and let his creativity run free by assembling his own “Playstation 5 Slim”. This not only shrunk the console, but also provided it with a water cooling circuit.

Compact PS5 with copper cladding and lower temperatures

Compared to the PS5’s 92mm thick Digital Edition, DIY Perks took down 72mm from the console and shrunk its PS5 Slim to 20mm. This is only slightly thicker than a DVD case. Of course, to get to this level, a lot of content from the Playstation 5 has to be unloaded, so that the mainboard is ultimately left over. For those including flash memory and VRMs, he made a full-cover water block and heatsinks for other components like the GDDR6 chips.

Meanwhile, the case of his PS5 Slim is made of copper, which is said to have a higher value than an entire Playstation 5 console. The HP-DP5-750RB-A power supply takes care of the power supply with 750 W. This should be able to achieve up to 62.5 A per 12 V, which is enough to supply the DIY PS5 with water cooling.

The Youtuber built a long, external aluminum housing for the power supply and its water cooling components. For the latter, an Alphacool slim radiator was used, with Noctua NF-A4x20 fans, a reservoir and a pump. Of course, its water-cooled design also aimed to cool the components down more than with a conventional PS5. The Youtuber therefore determined the temperatures on the SoC, on the memory and on the VRMs using temperature probes.

While running Horizon Forbidden West, DIY Perks recorded 65 degrees Celsius on the SoC, 52 degrees Celsius on the memory, and 44 degrees Celsius on the VRM side. These are supposed to be temperatures that are below the values that an original Playstation 5 generates. Anyway, the copper PS5 slim with water cooling is an interesting tinkering of DIY perks. Now it only remains to be seen when Sony will unveil the official PS5 Slim. However, it is doubtful whether this will be as thin as that of the Youtuber.
