The best for MS-DOS, Windows 3.x & Co.

teasers

Starting today, you can browse through the retro Olympus of PC games from the MS-DOS era / early Win95 era. There are also additional articles and the personal favorites of our game veterans.

If you have never had to deal with Config.sys and Autoexec.bat, have never had nightmares about the intricate settings of memory managers and if abbreviations such as IRW or EMS mean nothing – you must read the current RetroGamer special issue The best PC games classics on your own Buy knowledge hole filling reasons!

On the other hand, anyone who experienced the described era of computer games themselves, roughly from 1980 to 1995, will no longer read this sentence at all, but will definitely be walking to the kiosk (or following the order links below). Because the latest extra edition of Retro Gamer is dedicated to on around 200 pages over 70 classics for PC. More than a third of the articles have been completely rewritten for the special issue, the rest have been extensively adapted, shortened and updated. This is the only way we can get the full mixture, which you can convince yourself of in the reading sample below (table of contents)!

The special issue 1/2022 is also completely free of advertising, except for the back page – you can find it from today at the kiosk of your choice or in the Heise online shop.

Highlights of CLASSIC PC GAMES

The special issue takes you back to the good old days of PC oldies, divided into the classic genres Action, adventures, simulations, role-playing games and strategy.

Starting with crashing orgies of shooting in titles like doom and Syndicate is there at the Adventures we meet again with beloved LucasArts heroes like Indy Jones or Guybrush Threepwood, but we also forget German gems like Cathedral Not. The role-playing games take you along Ultimate, system shock and more into foreign worlds, in the strategy part you lead an amusement park theme park or even a whole nation in civilization. Of course, we also haven’t forgotten about the sports games and simulations that, among other things, with Wing Commander, M1 tank platoon and NHL Hockey 94 are represented.

Many of the articles (more than a third!) have been completely rewritten for the special issue, all the others have been revised to a greater or lesser extent. A special highlight are certainly the two-page lists of the best, each with the ten personal favorites of our authors. You will also learn a number of other anecdotes that we have never seen before PC Players, GameStars, Retro Gamers or on GamersGlobal betrayed…

At the end of the magazine you can expect company stories about greats like Sierra Online or Origins, and the magazine is introduced by Rudiger Steidle with a focus article on MS-DOS including a glossary and typical DOS commands.
