Instagram announces new age verification measures

Instagram wants to start tackling the worrying situation of accounts used by children. Until now, the social network has not paid attention to this detail that has parents and legislators in the United States alarmed.

It is no secret to anyone that today children can have access to many of the social networks and their content, which for adults and parents is considered explicit and not suitable for these minors.

9to5mac shared last year a study of 2,000 children in the US by thorn, a child protection organization. The results showed that 40% of children under 13 used Instagram and other social networks that claim to exclude them.

The most worrying thing about this is that the majority confirmed having been exposed to uncomfortable situations due to sexually abusive messages. Instagram and Snapchat were the networks most mentioned by children who confessed to having received messages where they were sent or asked for photos for the purpose of sexual interaction.

New age verification measures on Instagram

Months after being in controversy due to the study carried out by Thorn, Instagram has announcedhttps://about.instagram.com/blog/announcements/new-ways-to-verify-age-on-instagram today the new age verification measures you are testing and that could be implemented for everyone very soon.

“Starting today, we’re testing new options for people on Instagram to verify their age, starting with people based in the US. If someone tries to edit their date of birth on Instagram under the age of 18 or Plus, we’ll ask you to verify your age using one of three options: upload your ID, record a selfie video, or ask mutual friends to verify their age. We’re testing this to make sure teens and adults have the right experience for your age group. We’re also partnering with Yoti, a company specializing in online age verification, to help ensure people’s privacy.”

How Instagram verification methods work

Instagram explains how its new verification methods will work. At the moment they will be applied first in the US.later and according to their effectiveness they will be implemented in the rest of the countries.

video selfie: You can choose to upload a video selfie to verify your age. If you choose this option, you will see instructions on the screen to guide you. After taking a video selfie, we share the image with Yoti and nothing else. Yoti’s technology estimates your age based on your facial features and shares that estimate with us. Meta and Yoti delete the image. Technology cannot recognize your identity, only your age.

social voucher: This option allows you to ask mutual followers to confirm how old you are. The person vouching for must be at least 18 years old, must not vouch for anyone else at the time, and will need to comply with any other safeguards we have in place. The three people you select to answer for you will receive a request to confirm their age and will need to respond within three days.

Instagram adds new verification methods

However, according to the publication, these new methods will work only for registered users who want to “try to edit their date of birth”. That is, being registered as a minor and editing the date to become of legal age.

Another detail is that although the association with Yeti is announced as one of the most important verifications, it is not specified if your analysis will apply to new records or is an attempt to direct users displaying suspected minor activity to “appropriate” content.

In general, this is the topic that Instagram covers the most with its ad, consumption or adequate experience for each user.

Mention age verification as a complicated processdoes not impose this requirement to open an account and also, through the announcement made on Twitter by Adam Mosseridirector of Instagram in Meta, takes up the importance of showing content based on the user’s age, he does not say anything about the registration of minors.

But what do you think, Meta is more concerned with maintaining registered numbers and users than the presence of minors on its platforms? Does it offer a relevant solution with its new verifications? It is still too early to deduce whether this will convince those concerned and interested in this situation, but for the time being seems to be a consumption plan rather than a security measure. Let’s hope it doesn’t and it works.

In addition to this, the application had a bug that caused users to see repeated stories and the possibility of using a Meta avatar on Instagram was revealed. We’ll see what else is reported on the changes that Meta is applying in one of its most popular networks.
