Major Twitch streamer gets banned from Steam hit DayZ because an unfair person watched him play

Streaming on Twitch or other platforms is not just a hobby for many people these days, but also a livelihood as a professional activity. Nevertheless, there are people who use live broadcasts from some streamers to play tricks or gain an advantage for themselves. The Canadian xQc recently had such an encounter when he was banned for unfair play by a spectator in DayZ.

Why was xQc banned? On June 20th, xQc decided to play the Steam hit DayZ during a live stream. After a gunfight with another player, xQc was incorrectly banned when the admin tried to block a so-called stream sniper.

What is a stream sniper? A stream sniper is a person watching a streamer’s live broadcast while they are playing in the same match or server. Often this is done to gain an unfair advantage over the streamer and to know what they are doing, how they are playing and where they are.

In this case, stream snipers use the knowledge gained from the stream to find an easy victim in the streamer and, for example, to swindle an easy kill without much effort.

Stream sniping is banned in many games and on many servers, is considered unfair and is often punished with a ban

How exactly did the situation unfold? Lenglet played the survival game DayZ in his stream, which set a new player record in April. After a few hours of play, he had an encounter with another player who opened fire on the streamer.

Lenglet managed to win the gunfight, but when he tried to search his opponent for useful loot, the streamer was suddenly thrown out of the game. A message on the screen said he had an unstable connection.

When he subsequently rejoined the server, an admin of the DayZ server teleported to xQc’s character and informed him in voice chat that he had 100% identified a stream sniper. The admin addressed Lenglet with “X” as short form for its ID xQc.

Before the admin could finish his sentence, xQc found himself back in the survival game menu. This time the message “Banned by server admin. Period of validity: permanent”.

X! X! This is an admin speaking. That was a 100% stream snipe…”

The streamer no longer understood the world and wondered what happened. Despite the message that he was permanently banned, he was able to rejoin the server.

The scene then repeated itself and xQc flew off the server again, received the message that he was banned again and rejoined the server again. This time with success: the admin spoke to Lenglet and clarified the incident.

What was the admin’s reasoning? The admin team recognized a stream sniper in the player with whom Lenglet was involved in the firefight. They wanted to ban this, but something went wrong. As a result, Lenglet was wrongly blocked, which the admin wanted to fix.

X, wait a minute. We had to ban a stream sniper. Something went wrong. We’ll fix it. […] He came straight at you from about 1,000 meters and tried to shoot you.

Even if Lenglet certainly experienced a brief moment of shock when he saw the ban message in the survival game, he can count himself lucky that the situation could be clarified so easily and that the stream sniper didn’t take the fun out of the game.

In general, Lenglet seems to be feeling lucky at the moment. In another stream, the Canadian streamer opened loot boxes in the tactical shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and raked in the cash without realizing it.
