The WoW: Dragonflight Collector’s Edition… and the long faces

The Collector’s Editions of World of Warcraft expansions have continued to lose their appeal over the years, there’s no other way to put it. While the fans were still enthusiastic about the mouse pad, art book and the like at the time of the release, the joy of courage that the Blizzards have apparently lost over the years has repeatedly caused long faces. Expansion after expansion there was maybe a USB stick in the WoW Collector’s Edition, a physical soundtrack, lanyards.

But even such special goodies have become increasingly rare over the years. At the latest with the Collector’s Edition for Shadowlands, the faces of the fans were so long that you can no longer measure them with an outstretched arm. Because what is no longer included in the CE, thanks to the digital age, is at least a game box. Gritting their teeth, one or the other WoW fan will still have reached deep into their wallets. Out of habit. And the home WoW collection on the shelf looks weird if a CE is missing. It will probably be the same with her Collector’s Edition of WoW: Dragonflight be.

Expensive cardboard, hardly anything inside

I at least looked disappointed when I saw that the WoW: Dragonflight CE only contains standard physical fare: an artbook, a few pins, a mouse pad. The ninth expansion of World of Warcraft (buy now ), and I still get a cheap mini mouse pad if I put 130 euros on the table? Pins (this trend has never opened up to me) for 50 cents a piece?

If that’s the case with the tenth expansion, then good night. I mean: THE TENTH EXPANSION (if it comes to that) in 2024 (maybe), exactly 20 years after the start of WoW. Imagine, then the highlight of the “collector’s set” (as Blizzard calls the CE now) is a mouse pad! A MOUSE PAD! Uff. I hope the Blizzards will have more up their sleeves by then. They’ve already shown how it’s really cool.

WoW Classic brought f*cking Ragnaros!

Strictly speaking, the Collector’s Edition for WoW Classic was the first Collector’s Edition that I would describe as such. It cost just under 100 euros in the Gear Store at the time, and 120 on Amazon, and of course it’s now completely sold out. Why? Because it contained a figure, from the classic super antagonist Ragnaros!

Even though it wasn’t bronze like Thrall’s anniversary statue and was just plastic Fantastic, it was super cool to look at. And look at this: This CE cost almost 100 euros in 2019. Today you pay almost 130 euros to pre-order the Dragonflight-CE and it doesn’t come with a cool figure. But a mouse pad.

By the way, as you can see, I’m not alone in my opinion that the Dragonflight CE is a disappointment. A character by Alexstrasza, whether in dragon form or humanoid form, it could have been in there. It didn’t have to be huge, a smaller Funko-sized model, I would have been happy with that.

But what do I get? The tenth mouse pad that I would never use anyway, because I’ve come to use such a novel invention as mouse mats. Really, for WoW’s 20th anniversary, the folks at Blizzard need to come up with something more. If it comes to that. What about you? Do you still buy the WoW CEs? And if so: just out of habit?
