FromSoftware: More games in development by different directors

The developer behind Elden Ring has other games in development – and by different directors. According to Hidetaka Miyazaki, one of these games is already “in the final stages of development”.

A new game is almost ready

That’s what the director said to 4gamerswho questioned Miyazaki about a previous statement. In 2018, the Elden ring director explainedthat FromSoftware has been working on “three and a half” titles since 2016. He called the PS4 VR title Déraciné half a game. One of the other games was Sekiro.

So what are the other two titles? Miyazaki preferred to keep it to himself at the time. “It’s not the right time to talk about them in detail, but I think they’re both games that are typical for us. It’s going to take a while but I think we’ll be able to and to report on them as they take shape.”

One of those games later turned out to be Elden Ring. The other is unannounced to this day and is likely to have been in development for six years. This end-of-development title could be Armored Core 6, which surfaced in a consumer survey earlier this year.

More projects in progress

However, the unannounced title is not the only project FromSoftware is currently working on. The studio has several games in development from different directors, Miyazaki said: “As I’ve said in several interviews, the fact that we’ve been able to create a title on the scale of Elden Ring is largely due to the expansion of the staff within the company, but I think that from now on we will entrust them with other projects.”

“In fact, we’re working on several titles that will be directed by people other than me,” says Miyazaki. “I think we’ll be able to show you guys a different color of From Software’s direction, so look forward to that.” Miyazaki wants to avoid interfering in the work of the various teams as far as possible.

“So when I come into contact with a title that’s in development, I think about it a lot and I want to say something about it. But in this case, I’m not the director, I’m not the subject of the vision, and I can’t take responsibility take over at the very end, so I feel like any unnecessary interference would have a lot of negative effects on the game and the project.”

He himself is already working as a director on his next title. “In the medium to long term I would like to work on a more abstract fantasy than the last few titles,” he says. “Throughout the development of action RPG fantasy titles, including Elden Ring, I’ve kept accumulating ideas and images of fantasy that don’t fit this format, and I’d love to bring them together somewhere and publish them.”
