Norland Coming Soon to Steam: What’s Medieval Kingdom Sim All About?

The small indie game Norland is a Rimworld-brand simulation in which characters scurry around on a 2D map and the player creates their own little stories. At the same time facets and game mechanics from Crusader Kings and Caesar ensure that an entire medieval kingdom is simulated. Norland is scheduled for release in fall 2022.

This is how Norland plays

In Norland, the player takes control of an entire noble family that owns an entire city and is inhabited by multiple classes of people. There are farmers, soldiers, slaves and criminals. As in Rimworld, the citizen has their own needs and behaviors defined by their status and attributes.

Through interactions within the individuals, the game tells its very own stories. This leads to conflicts between the different social classes, to crime and finally to riots when the inequalities become too great – and a fight for the throne can even break out. The individuality of the subjects goes so far that all have their own family relationships, their own health care system and also their own background. Personality and family traits are thus passed on over several generations.

A political world map is added to the local village map, where the player can instigate political intrigues with other kingdoms. Events such as blackmailing other rulers, taking in plague-infested refugees or dealing with natural disasters are organized here. In order to make all this possible, players must construct and expand buildings. Efficient production chains are to be set up and trading with caravans is possible. Should one’s own population or neighboring kingdoms become unwelcome, the player plans bloody battles to assert one’s own interests.
