Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 gets Sharp “Cyber Stick” replica

Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 gets Sharp "Cyber Stick" replica

from Alexander Ney
At the beginning of June, Sega announced the Mega Drive Mini 2 in a live stream. The handy console replica comes with 50 pre-installed games, and a dummy Mega CD expansion module will also be available. But that was not all: As Sega has now announced, the mini-console is also to receive a replica of Sharp’s “Cyber Stick”.

Mini editions of classic consoles are very popular, as shown by the Nintendo NES and SNES Mini. Sega now wants to follow suit with the Mega Drive Mini 2 and doesn’t shy away from equipping the successor hardware with optional “peripherals”. A Mega CD expansion module, like that required on the original Mega Drive to play Mega CD games, has already been promised – albeit only as a dummy. Now Sega has also confirmed a replica Sharp “Cyber Stick” for the Mega Drive Mini 2. The 90s-style USB controller offers analog control for compatible titles, but will cost 19,800 yen (around 139 euros). For comparison: The purchase price of the Mega Drive Mini 2 will be around 70 euros, while the Mega CD dummy will add 40 euros to the bill.

Close to the original

The high price of the Cyber Stick replica is also due to the fact that Sega will adopt the original features of the joystick board. Accordingly, the replica has a stick and a throttle and will be suitable for both right- and left-handers. The revived stick can be used to play Mega Drive titles like Afterburner II, Mega Panel, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Night Striker, Ninja Warriors, Outrun, Splatterhouse Part 2, Starblade and Star Mobile. The Mega CD entries Fantasy Zone, Sonic CD and Virtua Racing are also among the pre-installed classics.

The predecessor of the Mini 2 was launched on September 19, 2019. On the model with two controller ports, a little less, namely 42 games, were preinstalled. The range of titles varied depending on the region, Sega had thrown a total of 63 games into the “distribution list”. For example, Alien Soldier, Shining Force 2, Slap Fight MD and The Revenge of Shinobi were missing from the European variants of the Mega Drive Mini.
