There are currently emails circulating ahead of a possible copyright infringement to warn. In reality, however, it is an attempt to install ransomware on the computer. More specifically, the malware “LockBit” is in the attached download links.
The problem was first identified by analysts at the Korean company AhnLab discovered. In the affected emails, people are first informed that they have allegedly used content that is protected by copyright. This is followed by a call that affected files via a link and then remove.
Instead, the link leads to a password-protected ZIP archive containing the “LockBit” ransomware. This is disguised as a PDF document and should not be opened under any circumstances. In the event of a real copyright infringement, no request would usually be sent to download the content concerned.
The LockBit ransomware used is a malicious program that belongs to the so-called “crypto viruses” and since Sept 2019 is in circulation. Back then it was still as “ABDC virus” and is still used today to specifically access and encrypt files belonging to the victims. The stolen information is only released again after payment of a certain sum of money.
