Horizon: Call of the Mountain will probably do without an open world

Keep your eyes open in virtual traffic! Not that a tallneck will trample you over the heap.

Horizon Call of the Mountain appears for PSVR 2, but probably without Open World.

In addition to their story and setting, Horizon Forbidden West and Horizon Zero Dawn also rely fully on the open world. The PSVR 2 offshoot Horizon Call of the Mountain should go a completely different way. And that literally: Apparently, in the virtual reality game we tend to move on pre-determined paths and can decide from time to time which path we want to take. At least that’s what the description on the official product page suggests.

Horizon Call of the Mountain relies on paths that we choose from

Apparently no open world: According to the official product page for Horizon Call of the Mountain Sony’s VR title certainly has a “living, breathing world full of machines” and a “diverse landscape”, but there is no explicit mention of an open world at any point. Which would have been somewhat surprising in view of the VR implementation – but of course less so in view of the other Horizon titles.

Instead there are paths: According to the description on the official Horizon Call of the Mountain site, we can explore the game world in “multiple paths”. We can obviously choose from them, which sounds like there is not only a certain freedom of choice, but possibly also an increased replay value.

Look around a lot, walk a little? On the Sony side, there is talk that we would have to look around to discover all the secrets of the mountains. All of this sounds very much as if the locomotion itself is limited to an absolute minimum. In the trailer we see various climbing and jumping interludes, but only one place where people run. Whether we can run actively at all remains questionable. It would also be conceivable, for example, that we only ever dodge at the push of a button and otherwise travel as if on rails.

When is Horizon Call of the Mountain coming? There is no exact release date for Horizon Call of the Mountain. Not even the rough period has been revealed so far. However, it can be assumed that the VR title will be launched at the launch of Sony’s VR headset PSVR 2. Unfortunately, that is not certain yet.

How do you like walking through the world like it’s on rails in Horizon Call of the Mountain? Were you hoping for an open world?
